If I remember there are location marks dented in the side of the wheelwell. My brackets are about 1" in from the inside lip where the weatherstripping is to the first hole. 4 1/4" to the next hole and 7 1/8 from the bare floor.

I also think when I installed mine there were small dents where the holes needed to be. Mine are fitted 1.5 inches down from the top of the wheel well to hole centre and 1 inch from the weather stripping to the first hole centre. If you look inside the wheel well, you should/might see a backing plate right where the chain anchor should go. Just centre the anchor on the plate and mark your holes.

These photos should give you the general location.

before drilling any holes hang the gate from the chains with the mounts where you think they should go and make sure it's level with the bed. May need to be tweeked a little to get the gate to hang correct. I do not recall any indents on my 74 when I did this?

Aaron, there should be those indents or holes in the inner skin or something to indicate where you drill the holes. There is also a welded in backer on the wheel side of the tub. If you don't see anything from the inside, take a look from the outside. I remember there were some indicators but I don't remember the details. Look, they are there.

Chain anti rattle hint - Get an inner tube from a bicycle and cut it to length. Push it over the chais and at the boyyom of the U cut a small hole for rain/condensation to escape. The tubes usually last several years before deteriorating.

Were these chain anchors bolted or riveted on?

Were these chain anchors bolted or riveted on?

The SIIA parts manual shows them to be bolted on, which is how I installed mine.

In my view there are at least two consequences that come with ownership of the parts manual. First off, it's a wicked time suck: you'll spend hours and hours going through it. Second, you will find in it all sorts of arcane and out-of-production parts that you will decide you can't live without. And then you'll start looking for them.

Thanks in part to this thread, I got my tailgate mostly mounted today. The one big mistake I made was instead of replacing my blank end caps with the ones with antiluce catch holes already drilled, I made a paper template off the replacement plate, marked and drilled (and filed my ass off). I thought I was on the money. Turns out I was way off. One side needed to go up, the other side needed to go down. Eff. So I decided to unbolt the catches and hold them in place so that they threaded the tailgate eyes just perfectly, marked the spots and made new holes. The damage isn't so bad, but still. Let this be a reminder to us all; measure twice, cut once. Also, never trust a repop. Also also, old things, man, old things.
