Anyone have a clue why after around 50 miles a new rotor button on a 1966 88 with a 2.25 liter keep breaking the center tang off??
It's not like the bearing in the distributor is loose , it's still tight with no side to side or up down play.

Cap improperly fastened? Defective rotor?

Here is a pic, just for referencing. How many have you broke? 1? 4?

Are you saying the copper contact is breaking off where it is mechanically held to the rotor body? If so, I would say your rotor is lifting and contacting the cap. Check for cap damage.

Your rotor should fit snugly on the shaft and not come loose on its own. Some rotors have an interference fit, others are held on with a small section of spring steel.

Mine has the style to the right and is held in place by a spring on the underside of the button. The brass part in the middle keeps breaking off. But no damage to the four points it contacts on the inside (no grooving).

I broke one last summer. Then one two weeks ago. This morning I broke one on the way to work.

The cap is a tight fit. Original snap springs I hold the cap on. Hard as hell to get them to go over the cap.

This is an on going problem. Find the red versions, made to original specs. Can not remember where i bought them but got a rotor for the ambulance and the RR.

I found a problem with an aftermarket rotor that seemed too tall to fit properly. The cap would snap on very tightly. It would run OK, but the dist. cap wiggled as it ran. The rotor would not let the cap seat properly on the Distributor body. It also caused much wear on the carbon button.

Solution: Filed the bottom of the rotor so it would sit properly. That was about 3 years ago.
