Does anyone have information on the original list price for a 1970 series IIA 88? I need this for local registration purposes - they want to tax me based on an absolutely absurd "original price".

BTW, I live in Maine. I know there are plenty of other old Series truck in Maine. Anyone on here who can give me some ideas on how to get mine registered?

Thanks, M

I just bring my 'sales slip' stating what I bought it for. It has been anywhere from $50 to $2500 for the purchase price. Most of the time hand written by the seller of a junk non-running Rover. Do you have the sales slip from when you bought it? Or is the truck one that you have had for years and you just moved to Maine and now need to register it?

I've owned it since 2007 and moved to Maine last year. Just finished refitting all the brakes and hub seals to get it back on the road.
I do have the sales records from when I bought it (I think - somewhere!).

Here's the window sicker from my '73, FWIW. It's a replica I made using the grease-stained original. Feel free to PS in your details and adjust the price for inflation.

Thanks! I'll try taking that in as an example.

What could the "original price" they are quoting you be? Like a 2010 RangeRover price? Odd.

Yes, something like that! $28,600. Could have bought seven brand new 88s for that much money in 1970!

My 1966 was originally sold new for $3,600. The town office required no information to verify this, they just plugged it into their excise tax calculator and charged me accordingly. I should have said $2,500 to avoid paying a little more.

In Maine, excise tax is charged on the price of the vehicle when new, and depreciates for the first 5 years, and then bottoms out to the price you will pay for the rest of the vehicle's life. It actually is counter intuitive if you ask me, because a 10 year old Range rover will alway pay more excise tax than a brand new Hundai!

Where in Maine are you located? Welcome to our great State!

M: What town are you in? I also have a '70, and registered it the first time ('91) using the bill of sale.

My bill of sale was higher than the price of the truck when new! Don't need to give the State any more money than you have to!

that is so weird...why wouldn't they just tax you on the purchase price of the vehicle? If you are moving, and own it they should go by the KBB, or Edmunds or something...if they leave it up to you just find some comparative items...weird government bureaucracy!
