View Full Version : Hinge pin assembly sequence - where does the @#$%& spring go?

I'm trying to re-hang the doors on my '66 series IIA.
The green bible (and the hayes manuals) illustrations all show the bronze ball and spring held in between the two hinge halves.
So the sequence goes
A. Bolt through top hinge
B. Bronze pivot ball
C. Spring
D. Lower hinge half
E. tabbed, slotted washer
F. Nut

Izzat the way it's really supposed to go? Where the spring sits in the lower socket and holds the bronze ball against the upper hinge half? The door wants to sit a half an inch proud and I can't pull it down (compress the springs) enough to get the lock washer on the bolt.

Weird. I did this job hardy thinking about it. I'd reference the assembly sequence on another door to make sure the new parts are the same and you're putting it together in the correct order.

Nope. Spring goes between the lower hinge half and the tabbed washer.

^^That illustration is wrong. The spring needs to go under the lower hinge half.

Tnx - I agree the illustration is wrong.
The only way I can assemble the thing is with the spring beneath the lower hinge bracket.
Why would the docs be wrong for 45 +/- years?

Don't know why the doc is wrong but Jac04 is correct.

My 71 is exactly like the picture and I'm sure it came from the factory this way. The lower hinge is bored larger to except the spring, I no longer use the tabbed washer opting for a plain washer and lock nut.... OK I just went and took mine apart and. I was wrong. lol.
The spring is BELOW the lower hinge..

You have to love rover owners! they go and take stuff apart just to confirm things, not because it is broken!

Ha Ha, yeh I once took the gear box apart to confirm how many gears it had... Not really. I did remember taking the rear door off for the first time and the spring having worn into the bronze ball so severely I replaced it, so either it came that way or the PO had removed it before except he was not a mechanical kinda guy, which might explain why it was the way it was. lol.
