gday hows it going.

i know that this may sound a bit amatuer, but i have kind on inherited an 88 inch series 3 off my brother, and have been driving it around for some time. its in pretty good nick so i dont want to stuff it up.

it runs a 2.25 petrol motor in it, and was rebuilt about 2 or 3 years ago, and whilst it is due for an oil change, i was wondering if i could get an expert opinion on what is the best oil to run in a motor like i have described. i understand a pretty heavy grade oil would be good, but i dont know about specifics.any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated

i dont know if it matters but im in Australia.

cheers,

sam

Howdy Sam,

Don't worry about the questions. That's what these forums are for. For engine oil, my favourite is 15w40 for summer. Summer for my location in BC, Canada can range from just above freezing to about +35C. I know the 20w50 is popular grade to run as well. Changing oil regularly is more important than what brand you use in my opinion (every 3000 miles).

Hope this helps,

Jon M.

Agree on the 15-40.

You can actually keep the same oil in your crankcase for 3000 miles? Mine usually leaks out enough that all i have to do is an occasional filter change, the oil is always new!

thanks,

i think it was running 20w50 before, but it will be running in come cold temperatures for the next few months, so maybe the 15w40 will be the better option..

what is a better oil in hotter temperatures, (ie never under 20 degrees or so)?

cheers

like the gunny i've the automatic oil changer, just keep topping off and never park it on the concrete drive. i use 20 50 castrol high milage year round. in albuquerque temps range from 20 to 100 F (-7 to 38 C)
