When I first bought it and the engine was in good condition, highway tires, still had the front spoiler etc., I could get a bit better than 16 on the highway.

When I first put my 1997 DI on the road, with about 150k on it, the MPG was an impressive 20-21.
Now with 216k, the o2 sensors are getting towards the end of their life, she still returns 16-17 MPG.

My 96 5 spd gets 19-20 on the highway. I did upgrade to a stainless NRP exhaust and K&N air filter. Roof rack also impacts the mileage. However, I don't drive very hard on open highway, and just go the speed limit.

Hmmm...maybe I'm not remembering well. It's been 12 years though so...

I'm a bit late coming to this but don't check this BB very often. About six or seven years ago I did a complete tuneup on the Disco (PCV, cap rotor, Bosch Platinum 4s, Magnecor wires, new 15-50 Mobil 1,air filter cartridge etc. Tires were Mud Terrain 225R75s at 34 F and 40 rear, spoiler removed, NRP cats and a Borla muffler and 5 speed . Using GPS to measure distance and speed and 89 octane I drove from Seattle to our home in BC on I-90 and on secondary roads. Distance was about 440 miles of which ca. 260 were at 70 mph and the balance at a mix of 55 and 60 mph. From Seattle to Cdn. border I got just a tad over 19 mpg. I don't think that a gas Disco is capable of anything much better. Now have diesel and get about 50% better mileage and great low speed torque.
