Sent my short block and head out to a machine shop for rebuilding (it's a 2.25L Series II - not IIA). When it came back, looking beautiful, they handed me these two hex head screws and said they had no idea where they came from. They appear to be special, very short, with split lockwashers. Anyone seen them in the process of an engine rebuild? I don't want to finish assembling and closing up the engine before I sort it out. Thanks!8317

Distributor hold-down? Oil feed tube? Dip-stick tube bracket? Oil filter housing?
Is there any paint on them to indicate they were internal or external?

They look internal to me. Oily.

Perhaps some other customer is missing something?

Haha! I wondered about that. Not sure that's good or bad - this is driving me to distraction and holding up my project. FWIW, it appears to be the same thread/pitch as the timing chain vibration damper...

Pretty sure I've got it nailed:

Those two fasteners go in the two empty holes you'll have once you re-assemble the engine.

Isn't that called a garage floor over here? Incidentally that is where I keep the fasteners I need to finish my projects as well. :D

So maybe my strategy should be: reassemble the engine, run it, and listen for noises and watch for spewing oil!!

Anybody think these might be what's left of rocker shaft locating bolts?
