Tires size!

I would like to give to my landy 1962 a better look by adding a set of wheel spacers around 3 mm and new tires.
My wheels size are 15. I would like to go a little wider than what I have now and a little higher. My actual tires are 245/75/15.
if somebody has some suggestions or pictures it will help.

What good are 3mm spacers? I'd tell you to get a set of 16 inch wheels and put on a set of 235/75 R 16 tires which are about 32.5 inches. Larger than that starts to look funny.

You must have a pretty well-calibrated eyeball to notice that your vehicle looks a bit off because the wheels are all one hundred eighteen THOUSANDTHS of an inch too far inboard! :p

The 245/75/15s are 30.7 inches dia and have a rim range of 6.5 to 7.5 inches which is wider than any stock Series steel rim.

When you are looking for tyres you should always make sure that the tyres are intended to fit the width of your rims. Reputable tyre retailers will not mount a tyre that is too wide for a rim. The good news is that if they do and the tyre comes off you can sue for damages. The bad news is that someone could get hurt or worse.

It is always a very good idea to choose a tyre that is designed for the width of your rim.

You didn't say if you had an 88 or 109. There was an option of 28" dia tyres for 15 inch rims on 88's. 109 One ton models came with 35 inch dia tyres on a 16 inch rim. Otherwise 88s and 109s came standard with 32 inch dia tyres. These were narrow tyres which work well under most UK muddy conditions. The narrow tyres dig down through mud and rely on finding solid earth below the mud before the diff finds the mud. The stock tyres are too narrow to present any noticeable floatation.

The widest genuine LR rim that will fit a Series is the Discovery I steel wheel. It is a 7 inch wide rim. The second widest is the 6.5 inch dia Defender Wolf wheels. If you want to go wider look for aftermarket rims which are common in the UK.

I am currently running 255/85R16 mud terrains on Discovery I steel wheels. These are 33.3 inches dia. just a little over an inch dia from bone stock tyres. They are designed for a 6.5 to 8 inch wide rim so would fit a Wolf or Disco steel wheel.

A 235/85R16 is 32 inches in diameter and will fit a 6 inch rim which is the widest of the Series rims. This is the closest modern equivalent to the old stock 750-16 stock tyre size.

I suspect that he was referring to the 30mm spacers that are marketed for the larger diameter metric stud (M16X1.5) found on late SIIA & SIII Series trucks. They are not intended for the SII and earlier SIIA hubs with the 9/16ths BSF lugs.

Make sure you have the right stud size before ordering spacers. Rims and tyres should have a compatible bead width.

X2 on TeriAnn - If you've still got the original 15" rims you are very limited on going bigger tires. I'm in the same boat. I've heard of guys doing the 31-10.5 on the original LR 15" rims but I wouldn't recommend it. Unless I happen upon a set of 16" wheels I can afford I will likely go with 30-9.5-15 BFG TA-KO. These are pretty common but not even quite as tall as your 245's.

Yah meant to write 235/85. Roughly equvalent to 7.50 x 16. Larger diameter than that you really begin to bog down the engine on hills.

There are plenty of big tires for 15 inch wheels, just not for skinny 5.5 wide rim.

33.3 inch dia 255/85R16 on Discovery I steel rims. If the front wheel arch looks a tad funny it is because the outer wing panels are from an early UK spec Defender.

Slightly wider than a 215/85/16 but no significant difference in steering wheel wrestling. And much better performance than 7.5X16 in sand when aired down. Granted it then becomes a bias-ply vs radial comparison too. While 235/85/16 look great I think they take away some drivability with stock HP level.
