Rear axle plug query.

On the outer side of the rear axle there seems to be a plug of about 1/2 inch diameter which has an Allen key access for removal. I assume that it is removable to add lubricant. If so, how much should be added to each side? Oil weight?- 90 ?

When renewing any 90w differential oil, first, drain oil by removing BOTTOM plug. Let drain, this will take a little while, Put plug back in bottom of differential. Then, remove TOP plug, on the rear differential and add 90w lubricant till it starts to flow out. This is full, or you can measure what came out and renew the same amount, or you can look inside the green bible to tell you how much. You might want to inspect the black lube that came out and look for any metal or shiny parts, this can tip you off to any problems you may have with the rear diff. Cheers.

Are you talking about the plugs located out on the drive flanges (button head with a hex in them for an allen key)? If so, they are there so you can add lubricant (90wt) to the hubs after you service the wheel bearings. Any extra oil will simply make its way back into the axle housing, so you really can't overfill them. I'd say add about 1/2 to 1 cup of oil to them if they are 'dry'. Usually, you only add oil after having the hubs apart, but adding a little extra oil won't hurt. By the way, if you remove the plugs watch for the seal washer under the head of the plug - don't loose them.
