I opened up the hand brake drum in my '60 Series 2 SWB and it had lots of gummy gear oil in it. I think there is a leak from the transfer case ??
Do you have to pull the rear shaft to get to it?
AND how in the heck do you get the brake pads back on? Is it easier with the shaft off or something?
Thanks for any help!!

Yes take the shaft off. It's a rover, oil is everywhere. Replacing the rear seal and shaft felt on the transfer case isn't bad. I found that the easiest way to get the brake pads back on was to wrap a wire from around above the transfer case, over the front of the pads and under the brake and back up- basically just holding them in place while I wrestled with getting the springs back on. Definitely need room to work so get the shaft out of there.

Also, give the seal surface on the drive flange a polishing with some green Scotchbrite to get all the old gunk off.
If it is grooved, our hosts supply a Speedisleeve to cover that and give a new seal surface.
