    Dismantling Road Springs

have a damaged rear spring (heavy duty 109 type, on my 88) need to replace the first leaf. any ideas on how to get the two keepers, the bar-like clamps near the ends with the rivet head pins, off the spring pack so I can remove the first leaf?

No real easy way other than grinding/drilling the head off the rivet & removing them. A spring shop can install rivet in new keepers.
Be VERY careful & take proper precautions when taking apart leaf springs - some leafs can be preloaded, and if there is rust between the leafs it is even worse.
