I am looking to mount a spare on my bonnet. Other then the tire/wheel, what mounting hardware and straps do I need to do this? Where can I purchase everything to make it look correct? Thanks in advance.

You basically just need #s 13,14&15 from this page with the appropriate fixings.

Those bolts are only long enough for stock wheels & tires though. If you have a wider offset or a wider tire (or if your cheap) you can substitute 2 threaded rods in those holes that can be held fast by a nut/washer above and below. Once both rods are secure, put wheel over so both rods stick up in the middle. Plop an 8" piece of unistrut over the 2 rods and secure with stainless nuts and bam! Cheapo alternative. I used the fattest threaded rod that fit through the holes but can't remember what that was. You'll never find threaded rod that matches those holes though (Whitworth??)

Keep in mind how much weight the tyre will add when you lift the bonnet- heavy.

Hold the bonnet in place from moving side to side, on a rough road.
The center pin and lock gets moved around and out of place, making it harder to un lock
I also added back that rubber stop that goes into the fire wall

How about those little rubber bumpers that the tire rests on. Mine are oblong but most I've sen are disks.

I read somewhere that one of the reasons they took the tire of the 'bonnet' in England is that the squaddies were starting to have problems lifting it. Not just the result of too many video games but probably that tires are getting bigger and thus heavier.

They are NLA I believe. Ike/Pangolin4x4 have reproduced. Second to last item listed on this page (http://www.pangolin4x4.com/land-rover-parts-products/rubber-parts-seals/).

Honestly the original "dog" type tire mounting hardware is pretty sucky. The single toggle type is waaaayyy better. Part #MRC5063 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Defender-spare-wheel-bracket-MRC5063-/220969160679?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3372c9cfe7).
I used some rubber bumpers (http://www.mcmaster.com/#9540k28/=uo3bgb) I got at McMaster-Carr. Pack of ten is just under $9. Believe me, nobody's gonna bust out a tape measure and check the height of your rubber!

Interesting. Does that work with the original, longer hold down bolt?

I just use a piece of flat bar stock with two holes drilled through it as a clamp, in lieu of the cam/dog things. No strap is needed.

Yawp. I am going to mod the bolt one of these days. A bit of flat stock welded on to make it like a big wing nut. Gotta be able to undo it with mittens/gloves on.

Yup, making a bar stock holder-downer has been on my to do list for a while, but then I finally got one of the dogs to hold and stay held, so a case of procrastination has set in.
