How is this better than just fitting an LED bulb into the original sockets? I'm a little lost in the necessity of this.

I would agree with you there, I have not checked but is there a direct replacement for the rear bulbs? That would be a much simpler solution.

Not to distract from the original post.

Yes there are direct replacements, I've done it on my own truck, and I gave a list of all the bulb sizes on GNR The only big(ish) issue is fitting an electronic flasher to the blinkers, as the LEDs won't flash with the bimetalic style of flasher. Still not sa big issie.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Les was just saying that the adapters are now available to make these Defender LED lights that RN sells into a plug-and-play affair for us Series Rovers:

            --Mark

            1973 SIII 109 RHD 2.5NA Diesel

0-54mph in just under 11.5 minutes
            (9.7 minutes now that she's a 3-door).

              Mark,

Indeed. The kit includes the cross over from the late (post 94) wiring to the Series and early Defender bullet connections. Also, you could alter the lamps to clear directional and clear (until in use) stop and tail lamps. If you are thinking of changing your lamps/lens' I put it out there as an option.

              # for the LED Lamp kit is PLK188LED. So new, it is not yet published. Let me know if you need details.
