OK, so if I'm looking at seepage on the outside of the hub only, onto the outside of the wheel, not on the inside or on the brake drum, what am I looking to need to fix?

Is this just the seal around the driving member, or something more?

Yep. Originally a paper gasket, most people nowadays use black Permatex "The Right Stuff" to seal the flange.

It could also be the hub cap.

You'll want the felt seal, too. PN RNE617. I use the below aviation gasket sealant:

Check your axle vent to be sure it is venting properly. It's the brass fitting in the top of the axle housing, if it is clogged pressure will build up in the axle housing causing leaks, easy to check, remove vent make sure its venting, clean with brakleen, reassemble in reverse order of removal..
ROVE ON

Thanks all. I'm experimenting with it just being the hub cap. I pulled it, cleaned everything then put some Right Stuff just along the inside. This way I can look at it a few miles down the road and see exactly where the muck is coming from.

When I popped the cap off, a teaspoon of oil came out. Normal?

Yes. Some oil can make its way into the cap.
