Hi,

I'm looking to get an engine stand for my 2.25L Petrol 3 bearing Series III engine rebuild project.

But I don't know which stand to get 'cos I'm not certain of the engine weight (other than 'bloody heavy' which is not specific enough).

Could I get away with a stand rated to 1000lbs, or do I need to go up to 1500lbs?

Cheers and thanks,
Warren.

When I had a military engine shipped I think the weight was 750lbs and that was in the crate. Someone will chime in pretty quick if I am wrong . . .

Just had my complete petrol 2 and a 1/4 on a cheap 750lb capacity stand. The only issue I had was needing to space out the mounting brackets (w/ longer bolts and some washers) to clear the end of the crank. Pretty certain the engine is well south of 750lbs. Probably closer to 500...

I've had my 2.25l petrol on a 1,000 lb. stand and there were no issues at all.
When I was researching 200 TDI and Mercedes diesel swaps I found the 2.25L petrol weight was quoted at less than 500 lbs.

I bought a cheap 3 legged base in a tee shape with 3 casters. While it did the job it was very tippy and I needed
to be careful especially when rotating the engine. I would recommend a u shaped base version.

I have a Harbor Freight engine stand, worked just fine, it's Chinese made I am sure , but it worked just fine.

Used that very one for my 300tdi rebuild. Sturdy enough, but getting the block reasonably centered was a pain, and the pivot was borderline useless. If I were starting over I'd look at alternatives.
