Replacement Seats?

Does anyone have a recomendation for used/replacement front seats for a Series? I'm looking to get some high-back seats for my IIA 109 SW.

I'm guessing the qualifications are thin back and bottom cushions and something that mounts to a flat floor or can be modified to do so.

Used Defender seats are rare and expensive. So far, I've heard about Ford Escort seats being used, but are there any others out there I should be looking for? I'm seeing this as a junkyard "target of opportunity" search unless there are reasonable new replacement ones out there (Jeep?) From pictures I have seen, my LR once had seats that looked Japanese, but these seem to have been replaced by the PO with deluxe low back LR ones.

They won't work in an 88, but Corbeau GT2 works nice in Defenders and 109s, and far more comfortable, supportive, than Defender seats. Not sure what they're charging now, but when I got mine they were low to mid $200 range/ea. Adapting them to LR seat rails is very simple. Don't spend the money on the Corbeau rails.

I used a set of Bestop Trailmax pro seats in my SIIa. They cost approx. 250 each new. They have a jeep bolt mounting pattern but a couple of hours with a sheet of .060 pate and some 1/2 or 3/4 inch box tubing makes an adapter that mounts onto the land rover sliding seat rails. If you do it right the seat will also slide back over the lip at the back of the seat box giving you and extra inch or two of leg room. The cushions are thin enough to give you leg room under the steering wheel.

They are comfortable, have adjustment for the back rest and even, should you need it, a storage net on the seat back.

On reflection I suppose this means you could use any old jeep seat.

Some like the old Volvo 240 seats.... I've never tried them, don't know if I'd like 'em or not.... FWIW...

On the note of seats, can anyone tell me if the LR deluxe back seats are much more comfortable than the normal IIA seats. I know aftermarket highback seats are probably the most comfortable but like the original look of lowback LR seats (deluxe and regular). In addition, I am 6'3 in height which is not really a problem unless you are trying to tell when a light changes from red to green at the intersection. Anyone try lowering the height (foam) of a seat to get better front winshield visibility.

While we're talking seats.... will the highback (Trakkers?) seats fit in a 109" with a truck cab? I also need different seats but I don't want to sit angled forward if the seatback is pressed against the rear window of the cab.

I'll see your 6'3" and "raise" you 3 :) I'm 6' and have been able to see maybe half a dozen traffic lights in the 6 weeks I've owned the truck.

One of my shortlist projects is figuring out how to install a water tight clear window in the soft top roof of the cab.

The ride is bad enough, you really don't want to take out cushion material. As for traffic lights, try stopping a bit further back.
I went to the Isle Of Man years ago for the races, and the Supporters club was giving away those clingfilm sun shades you put on the inside of your windscreen. They were blue. Since there were only 2 traffic lights on the entire island, they wouldn't have known you can't see a red light through a blue sunshade. It just looks like it's burned out.

I will have 3 fuel tanks in my 109 SW when I finish, I am looking for the "junkyard" verity that will still allow me to fill the underseat military tanks. It would be nice not to have to dismantle the vehicle to refuel.

If you figure out a nice work around for that problem, let us know. I have a set of Rangie seats to go into my series once I figure out how to fill it up. It's on my "one of these days" list of stuff to figure out.
