When changing traney oil in my IIA it came out gray and chunky with steel pieces. All gears are still working, but I parked it and started planning a transmission rebuild. Found a Series III transmission. Can anyone tell me if that would bolt to my IIA? I don't know what motor it was attached to before. My IIA has a 2.25 Petrol. If motors were different, couldn't the bell housings be switched. Also, want to know if the interior parts are interchangeable. And how do you tell what gear ratio the transfer case has?

I searched the forum for answers on transmission swaps and this came up because I am looking to upgrade my 69 Series 2A transmission to a 74 Series 3 transmission. Also curious if everything bolts up to it universally...... does anyone have any guidance on this?

The clutch release system is completely different from a 2a to a 3. Either you convert the release mechanism (which involves trimming the frame for clearance where it interferes) or you swap the 2a bellhousing and clutch release onto the 3’s gearbox.

The early Series 3 gearboxes are not as robust as a late 2a, so you will need to be nice to it. The main issue is the synchros don’t like fast shifts, they like a pause in the shift at neutral to allow them time to work before being shifted into the next gear.

Unless the 2a box is worn out and the 3 is fresh, this isn’t really gaining much that most feel is worth the effort.

thank you for the guidance! I love my 2A tranny but I'm the only one in the family that knows how to use it so was thinking the 3 tranny with the syncro gears might be a little more user friendly. Plus, I could get the old tranny for like $150 which I thought was a steal. I guess I'll stick with the 2A I have now. Thanks!
