Hello everyone;
Last week, after 18 months of hard work, we completed the restoration of our second Land Rover Series in Peru.
I am very thankful to all members of this Forum and also to the sales specialist of Rovers North…, with your help this project was an easy and enjoyable task.
The truck was stored on my patio for over 10 years with no use and it was a challenge to turn it on for the 1st time;… armed of a good battery & our hand crank and after checking all fluids we applied the trick my mechanic teach me “to trow a little gasoline at the carburetor air intake pipe”… the truck started after a couple tries,… our first reaction was to run away from the truck because the engine fan did throw at us lots of white dust that accumulated over those 10 long years…
Among other things we worked at were:
1. Carburetor diaphragm replacement
2. Replacement of seals on break pump and bleeding of break lines
3. Fuel pump replacement
4. Fuel line replacement
5. Air filter clean up
6. New sparkplugs and engine tune-up
7. Distributor checks/calibration and Point Set replacement
8. Fuel tank clean up (found it with a ½” thick TAR like material on it)
9. Fuel tank leak/crack fix
10. Rehab of rusted fuel draw tube, buoy sensor and replacement of seals
11. Steering column and rods checks, adjustment and small fixes
12. Radiator checks and replacement of new brass Upper and Lower tanks
13. Speedometer cable replacement
14. Lights and Electrical wiring upgrades
15. Other miscellaneous:new shift knobs & boots, new window & door latches/locks, new mirrors, new battery, new decals
16. New hand crank (hand made by a local iron craftsman)
17. New side and rear steps (hand made by a local iron craftsman)
18. Rehab of all truck seats and re-surface with black leather
19. New interior door panels and trim (hand made by a local leather craftsman)
20. New paint job to a LIGHT PORCELAIN GREEN on main body (int/ext), LIMESTONE on roof/roof sides & wheel rims, SILVER on side ribbons and BLACK on back bumper, door knobs/hinges and interior dashboard
21. New tires BF Goodrich, All Terrain KO2, 265/70R16
It sounds like a lot, but we really enjoyed the whole task and ended up with better mechanical skills and have many tools and tricks at our disposal to fix & keep this beautiful/awesome machine running.
