View Full Version : Tires and tubes?

I just dropped off the wheels from my '64 to have the 45 year old tires removed. Next week, I'll be dropping the wheels off to have them sandblasted and epoxy primed, before painting them myself.

The guy at the tire tire store was making a big deal over whether or not I could still get suitable inner tubes. He said the ones needed for these wheels have a very fat neck, and he didn't think those were available anymore.

So, first question - does everyone run tubes in their modern tires? If so, what are you doing for innner tubes?

Thanks

Most people go for modern radials and ditch the tubes. Much easier and much safer.

Ok, thanks.

I see ads for tubed and tubeless steel wheels. What is the difference? Do the "tubeless" ones simply have a "safety bead", or is there a difference in the way they are constructed?

Safety bead as you stated.

If you do go for tubes again and the tubes have a skinny valve stem that is smaller than the hole in the rim be sure to have the tire shop put in a proper reducing grommet. These grommets are available from Coker. If you don't install the grommet the valve stem bounces around too much and will eventually fail. Ask me how I know.

I run typical radials, on 15 inch stock rims. My truck came with only one original "split" rim, and that had a tube inside the tire.

I ran split rims for several years. Tube required, no doubt.

Oh, and radial or bias ply have nothing to do with tubed or tubeless. You can get tubes specific to radials. Used them in my split rims.
