My 1995 discovery will starts some times witout any problems about every 3rd time and then it will take a long time to crank after pushing the gas pedal serveral times. I have tested the battery and changed the alternator and they are good. Stater is good. When it has the problem you can smell gas when it is trying to start. Once cranked it seems to run ok. i have taken it to a local mechanic and he was unable to find the probelm. Tested the computer and can't get any infromation from the computer. Gets spark and fuel. Fuel pressure about 34 but goes down right after the LR is turned off. Was told should hold pressure for 20 minutes.

Would appreciate any help?

Thanks and God Bless,

Hello there,
I have a 1995 Discovery as well w/ similar if not the same issue.
Starting it in the morning is always instant and fine-
However, when its been running for awhile and I turn it off- do something
for lets say 1/2 hour or so- come back and try to start- it will usually
be a prolonged start (meaning the engine does not turn over immediately,
and I need to pump the gas pedal). vrs. when I have been running it for the same period of time and turn it off and restart it within 0-10 min. start it up- no problems. The weather also seems to affect it (cold neg.)

Some things I've done to try and improve/fix the issue:

-Had the timing checked and tweaked a bit
-Replaced fuel filter/had fuel pump checked
-Oil changes (w/ correct oil weight for season-LR dealer does not
adjust oil weight per season here)
-Fuel injector cleaner (just add w/ full tank)
-Replaced the spark plugs wires/cap and rotor w/ genuine parts
-I also only use premium fuel (LR recommends)
-Something I've done has helped, but it is still present to a lesser more infrequent degree.
I hope this helps you out. -cheers

This was an interesting problem to fix. I had to put it on a pressure gauge and found out it had very little pressure from the pump and on the rail. Replace the fuel pump and pressure regulator. Help pressure but would slowly loose pressure. Still had a smell of gas. Pulled the rail and the injectors were leaking. Not all but two or three and not at the same time. I replaced the injectors and now runs like new.

Thanks and God Bless,

Any signs of leaks from the coil? Worth replacing at this age.
