Air cleaner disassembly

So....I did a search on disassembling the air cleaner on my 63 Series IIa. I am no mechanic, but I am stumped on how to get the wire mesh and it's silver retainer/holder out of the air cleaner housing (I unclipped the bottom with the oil and took the upper nut and top cover off). I have had the truck for two years, and I bet the air cleaner has not been taken apart in many years.

Any ideas of how the wire mesh and retainer part come out of the housing? Any wait to use a tool to get leverage to pull it out? I just don't want to force it the wrong way and dent/break something.

Although the official workshop manual shows that the wire mesh section of the air cleaner can be removed, the one on my car (1962 2A diesel) is firmly crimped onto the main body and is not removable. You can remove the top air intake cap and the bottom oil cup, but thats it.
To clean mine I just dipped it in the cleaning solvent in a parts washer tub and swooshed it around to clean it, then let it drip dry.

Maybe earlier Land Rover air cleaners could be taken apart like the illustration in the manual, but mine sure wouldnt!

I have two oil air bath units. One has the mesh filter seized in place. The other - it can come out.

Having it stuck in place is not the end of the world. The goal is to clean it... Spray liberal amounts of brake cleaner into the mesh and let it drain/dry. Or immerse it in a solvent/cleaning solution as mentioned in the prior post.

Super..thanks! Mine appears crimped-in as well. I sprayed carb cleaner into the mesh and let it sit for a day. Much appreciated!!!!
