Installed a tach in my 109. Shifting at 2800rpm for 2nd and 3rd and 2500rpm into 4th and cruising at 2000rpm at 30mph. Sound about right ?

Data from Land Rover for Sales Persons, shows Standard gearing for an 88" on original tires ( 6.00x16 or equivalent dia.) is 15 mph per 1000 engine revs in 4th gear . A 109" on 7.50x16 ( or equivalent dia.) is 16.5 mph per 1000 revs . So anything between 30 mph & 33 mph at 2000 rpm is about right. Speedometers tend to over read , and different tire makes of the same designation will often be different diameters . For instance the Michelin XS 7.50 x 16 available as an option on Series vehicles is 17.2 mph /thousand revs.

I got the Last series 3 on the west coast. always drove it at 50mph indicated on 15" tires, still do!! but then I got a fairey overdrive and recently drove to Los Angeles and bought the 16" wolf rims with Michelin X on them ....... wow, what a difference! kinda unrelated but I understood the Series came with 15" rims to get the bumper height correct for USA.

Your gear ratios must be quite a bit higher than mine. I would be at about 3400 rpm and I think 4000 is redline.
With the 16s you can cruise more comfortably than on 15s correct?

if you have a 88 it is unlikely the gear ratios are different. I never had a taco-meter and just ran by ear most of the time. My mom said she drove it at 60 (when new) but that was just a short transit. Mine never suffered from excessive rpm so 55mph on 15" rims was probably fine and i suppose it'd be fine going faster as I've heard such. With the over drive and 16" rims I've heard 72mph indicated is fine but then we don't know what the speedo cable output was rated for.
