Two kinds of Land Rover Series owners...

The other day, it occurred to me that there are two kinds of Series owners:

#1) The kind who say:

"These things run forever!"
"I've never had a problem. Never replaced anything!"
"Haven't even changed the oil!"
"It leaks, but runs strong!"
"All original! Every bit of it!"

..and..

2) The next owner who has to rebuild everything because the last guy wouldn't do any maintenance.:|

I am definitely #2 but had a hell of a lot more fun than the guy I got it from. Been all over with it and smiled a lot more doing it. My son also got to learn to weld, replace a motor, bleed brakes, etc. What more can you ask for?

An interesting thing is happening lately to me, with respect to car restoration/repair. It seems that Mechanics don't want to work on these anymore?! I always did my own repairs, unless it required really specialized equipment or computers...or if it was a really uncomfortable, tedious thing that was easier to just pay a mechanic 1Hr rate to do up. But, lately, I've been calling up all the British car specialists and local mechanics in my area and no one wants to work on a 50 year old car?

I'm at a loss to understand. These things need maintenance. I figure if you're a mechanic, you just got into a long-term relationship with a paying customer...the "gravy train" of steady income. But, apparently, Mechanics just want to change oil and Reset computers these days?!

Have you guys found decent Mechanics willing to work on Series in your area?

Back East we have a number of mechanics and garages that Love these rigs, and they will wrench on them, all you have to do is ask and pay. Between, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New York and Connecticut, a person has a choice. I will agree that some garages, and mechanics look at you like "what the hell is that?" But if you choose the right garage with the right people, you will be happy that you did.

kinda funny (at first) fact is you're not likely to find a 'modern' shop to take it on because many are out of their league on these, another is it is more likely to take more than they anticipate.......... (changing oil without the spin on adapter filter)
the progressive shops prefer to work on the modern stuff, that's where the money is. easy work, profit on parts, it's all on a schedule etc.
If you find someone that'll take it on you're likely to find a pretty fair mechanic.
or a desperate one?
