    Gas Leak

My 1969 Series 2a is leaking a lot of gas from the gas tank area. I would assume that it’s a hole in the gas tank but wanted to see what you all thought I should do. I read someone’s post about replacing theirs with a Pangolin stainless one. That makes sense. But wanted to ask anyway.

Rule number one with these old things: Never assume anything... Could make an 'Ass-U-Me' kind of thing. Check and see if it's a fuel line or fuel tank gasket, do the easy stuff first. These use up enough money without throwing more at them.

Good chance U have a leaking fill or overflow hose. On an 88" these can be checked behind the right seat back w/o taking things apart too much. See if either of the hoses is wet to the touch, or if things smell gassy behind that seat then replace both hoses. (This problem often shows up only when the tank is filled all the way.) Without dropping the tank U can put too much pressure on the tanks spigots 'cuz they're only attached to the tank with lead solder, so B carful when moving things about!!!!
BTW, the front of the SWB tanks is vulnerable 'cuz there's a natural dirt trap made by the front tank outrigger. I recommend hosing this out frequently 'cuz the mud holds moisture and this accelerates rust.

They all tend to do this, these units are folded at the seams, and with years of some potential off road use, they will separate and leak. Try a leak fix, a liquid that you pour into the tank, let harden and hopefully fix the hole, stainless tanks are nice, but big money. If I remember right, Canada made some tanks that were (rocky mountain?? not sure, they were like a clam shell two parts seam welded, I bought two years ago and they do not leak, but the drain bolt has rusted shut. Best of luck,
