Typically, what temperature should the coolant be? Mine runs between 120 and 160 and I'm beginning to wonder if my thermostat either even opens or is open all the time.

most of my rovers have run betweeen 74 and 88c, hotter on the hwy in the summer. no with the 3 liter there is an electric fan set to come on around 80-85. rarely see anything above that unless the water is low or the rad is clogged full of mud.

hope that helps. 160 is low I'vee heard that oill doesn't lubricate properly below certain temps, not sure how much that matters or pertains to coolant temp.

My 2.25p warms up to 88C on my dual gauge, and sits there regardless of load on the motor. I've drivien it fully loaded for a weeks' summer camping, with 4 people, on and off-road and it's sat right at 88C. Same story in Winter with a muff. The RN-sourced t-stat is now a few years old.

Jim,

I ordered it from the paper catalog, but I assume it was this one:

THERMOSTAT - 88°C / 190°F SERIES IIA & III

Lucky, stop by any of your friends that have an auto repair shop..All mechanics have a point and click hand held temp. tester and you can have you T/Stat qualified in less than 5 minutes @ the cost of a ham sand...............Donnie
