Okay, I'm at a total loss.

Two issues that happened simultaneously yesterday. I'm not sure if they're related.

>Stopped the car after running errands and the battery light stayed on with the car off and the key out.

>Started it back up again and the battery light went off (so the alternator is working).

>I got on the highway and immediately experienced this pretty violent lugging. It was not a fuel pressure issue. The tach can climb at will, the car iddles fine, etc.

>It seemed like a transmission thing there was some periodic metallic noise.

It felt like pumping the brakes and the gas.

Any ideas?

You need a new alternator , is has an internal issue, i've seen it several times. dont know the exact caues though. regulator ?

I would also suggest a new alternator.
My '91 Classic had similar issues, though the pulsing headlamps and erratic seld setting of the CDL system has not happened to you !!!
Try getting it tested at the local autoparts outlet and see if the regualtor and diode pack are functioning.
