My gas engined Rover has just started to diesel when I shut it off. What is the cause and what is the cure?

I had the same problem on my 74, I turned down the idle, and started to use 93 oct. gas and added the lead substitute, and found that my points needed to be adjusted. this may help.

your timming is to advanced. if you recenty started buying lower octane just retard the timing.

An engine continues to run when the ignition is shut off because it is still receiving spark and fuel.

Spark generally comes from carbon in the combustion chamber that continues to glow and provides a source of ignition. It can also occur from timing advanced too far.

Fuel is generally supplied from and idle setting too high.

With commercially available fuel, I have not seen engine run-on caused by too low of octane, but depending on region and age of fuel, things vary.

Good luck!

When I had the 2.25 I found a very small adjustment to the idle would produce or resolve run on. Now my engine diesels on purpose:D

Hello there,
Ref this issue, both Zenith and Weber offer a solenoid to shut the air/fuel down when the ignition is turned off. The "power end of the solenoid is connected to the coil, so when you turn the key off, the solenois automatically closes the air way.
So far, the success rate for both carbs. has been good.

Jim,

What kind of carb do you have?
We keep the Weber one in stock, I think I may have a used Zenith one available (tested of course).
Please advise,

you can take off the air filter, hold the throttle open and slowly pour some water down the carb, making sure you keep enough throttle to keep it running. Helps blow out the carbon that may be the problem.

i would readjust the the idle, and retime your engine. clean readjust your points.never had to use this solenoid switch.

Unscrewing a plug on the side of the carb and than screwing in the soleniod.
Than running 12 volts from a ignition switch source.
The easist place is from the coil but I have an electronic ignition distributor so no extra spads.
So I ran it from the fuse block which had a couple open spots.
Took about 10 minutes.
