View Full Version : Foul Smelling Clutch

I have a strange problem...occasionally when clutching, particularly around a corner, and at low speeds, I get a strong foul smell in the cab of the 109.

It's like standing water, rancid garbage, rotten broccoli... you get the idea.

Having impeccable personal hygiene, I have ruled out myself as a source.

The clutch is a year old, works great, and the smell is NOT the characteristic burnt clutch.

I do have one suspicion of what the problem is but I would like to hear "the learned opinions of the Rover minions".

Thanks

Mo

Is your wading plug in the bell housing?

No, no wading plug. And I haven't waded since April.

Is it a burning smell? Could anything be dripping onto the exhaust pipe when you go around a corner?

No, not burning, like I said, it is rancid, think standing water, garbage, wet gym socks, etc.

Nothing dripping on the exhaust.

Remains of that little Honda ricer that tried to cut you up last week and ended up decorating the undercarriage getting a bit foostie?

leaking clutch hydraulic line pissing on the hot exhaust. though you'd likely have run out of pedal by now.

maybe it *is* rotting broccoli.

I did find grass wrapped around my clutch plate once. It was well dried though and not rotten at all.

Momo,

It's time to let us know what your suspicion is, because you haven't given us enough info to go on.

It must be something stuck under the truck. Nothing I've ever smelled on any vehicle has smelled like that.

Now a few more guesses:

-You have been 4-wheelin in a landfill. (You should know better.)

-You ran over a dirty diaper that got sucked under the fresh air intake for the heater.

-Those weren't sticks that were floating in that little "creek" that you forded last week.
