Ok gents,
I have two speedos sitting on the bench.
540114 Worn out and broke way back at 99K miles. Came fitted to the truck
540129 Brand spanking new in the box at a good price.

Both claim to be for a 67-71 SIIA 88. This is good as I've got a 71IIA. Now obviously the difference is in the ratio for tyre size. The big question is what tire size are each of the speedos for?

I've been running for years without a speedo and not really had any issues but I got this one for a steal so its going on the truck. I'll check it against the local radar speed control but I'm also interested to see if I bought one for the small tyres or the big tyres.

Cheers
Gregor

Gregor,

When your ready for a shake down cruise, drop me a line. I will fire up my 69 IIA with 7.00x15's and we can compare speedo readouts.

Howdy Gregor,

There should be the last four digits on the face of the speedo that should tell you.

There are some exceptions but mainly:

1408 - LWB w/7:50x16 tires

1504 - SWB w/ 6 or 6:50x16 tires

Hope this helps

You can try a handheld GPS if you have one available. That will give you a good idea of how close you are.

Ok gents thanks for the replies. How about a four digit code 1536? Is this the rare 20" spinner dubs speedo?

I've heard of 6.5X16 and 7.5X16 but what weer the 15" tyre options on the NADA trucks?

Jeff, It would be cool to meet. I'm just slinging this on my old runabout for fun, probably at the weekend. My big effort this week is to get my 101 tuned and through emissions which is always a battle and then next week to swap on a new set of bar grips. Hmmmm I wonder how 9.00 X 16's would look on an 88? After that I will be ready for some outings.

After that I'm going to reduce my bank manager to tears by ordering a new canvas for the green beastie.

My 101 is such a garage queen with the 88 being its poor brother. It feels nice to occasionally sling something bright and shiny and new its way.

I've heard of GPS. It's how the rest of the planet figures out they are lost:) I'll need to see if a friend has one.

Cheers

Ok, After hunting around and finding my copy of the US ammendment to the owner's manual I found this. US spec SWB 88 were delivered with tyres 7.10 X 15 which = 1536. I have never seen or heard of anyone selling that size but I suppose you live and learn. It shouldn't be too far off the 30s I'm runing at the mo so I'll live with it. The original speedo had the same 1536 coding so I'll say I've got a good replacement.

Cheers
