This just happened... I went to move the rover in 1st gear and had some hesitation. Thought it was a locked up brake. So I moved the rover forward in 1st and in reverse with the hope of freeing it up.

After 3 or 4 tries the rover wont go into gear. I get a little noise when I try to go into reverse and 4th but, thats it.

No grinding, peddle for clutch seems to work fine, no overdrive installed, it just wont move. It has sat for 2 weeks thru 3 rain storms and freezing weather change.

Any suggestions would be great..

P.S. thanks Les for the help on the phone earlier. (just looking for back up) :thumb-up: Although, we all know you are the "Rover answer man"

This happened to me at MAR, the springs that keep tension on the reverse gate popped off and jammed under the shifter forks. Once I pulled them out of the way everything worked the way it should again.

Nothing seems to be in the way of the shifter forks. My clutch reservoir is filled to where it should be. Clutch peddle wants to engage but wont.

I originally thought it was the clutch plate or through out bearing but, not so sure now.

Any other areas to check?

is there somewwhere you can drive without being in too much traffic?

if your clutch is stuck, try the following

handbrake on.

gearbox in 4th

foot on clutch

hit starter.

if that doesn't work, try this.

select 2nd gear.

handbrake off

start vehicle, it should work, if not try 1st.

drive along at a decent speed

then, at the same time:

depress clutch

depress brake

depress gas

if you see smoke, your clutch is not stuck and the problem is elsewhere

I had this happen on a friend's truck. turned out to be the adjustment in the slave cylinder pushrod.

as of right now, I can not engage any gears. It feels like it wants to engage reverse, 2nd and 4th but, wont move the rover.

Prior to this happening it would move in gear giving alot of resistance. It was like the emergency brake was on or one of the brakes was sticking.

I moved the rover forward and reverse (10 feet in both directions) 3 times and then couldnt engage a gear.

Clutch master, slave, through out bearing????????????????????????????

I am thinking of just replacing them all

You should get into stand up... :thumb-up: Funny ha ha, funny like a clown, just plain funny...

It does engage neutral................. and will actually move in neutral (with a push) both when its running and off.

Thanks for the comic relief...........

I believe he is asking if you engage the different gears when the engine is shut off! He is trying to determine if your clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel.

Dave is serious. With the engine off can you engage tranny into any gear? If you can then you have some sort of clutch issue. If the engine isn't running and you still can't engage it then you have a tranny issue. Easy way to help determine which direction to go.

Sorry, on my 4th beer.

it does go into each gear while off and will not allow the rover to move forward or back if it is in any gear.

Just to clarify. I can start the rover with my foot on the clutch and in any gear. When I have it in any gear and release the clutch it feels like it wants to go into gear but doesnt move the rover.

pull all the way back on the red lever then repeat your experiments. let us know the outcome.

Just tried it. Nothing. The rover wont move. I didnt even feel the transfer box attempt to go into 4WD.

The more I do this the more I think it is the clutch plate and fly wheel connection. (this is what Les seemed to think at noon today also)

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and order the clutch kit.

ok

It doesn't make sense when you say "I didnt even feel the transfer box attempt to go into 4WD."

it doesn't "go into 4WD." in any way that you would "feel".

YOU put it in 4wd. when you pull back on that red lever it IS in 4wd.

your terminology is confusing.

ok, editing this since my last msg was less than coherent.

do you have free wheel hubs?

are they locked?

free wheel hubs are locked. I can usually feel/rear the shift into 4WD and I didnt. I was of the opinion that a short rotation of the tires/hub was needed to engage 4WD.

All that said, I understand what your confused about and am confused myself hense the questions.

The simplicity of it is (based on the fact that the front wheels did not engage drive while 4WD was in) I think is that the issue is between the clutch plate and the rear diff.

It seems that the rear diff. is not getting power so, where do I look?

I think it's the clutch plate and fly wheel or possibly the through out bearing... Unless theres something I overlooked.

After reading all of this it sounds like you poped the disk in the clutch thats when the plate materiel pops off the disk I have seen it before. It will work one minite then the next no clutch just like that. that is my guess with out having it here in my shop.

do you have an overdrive? the input spline could be stripped.

there is enough freeplay in the drivetrain for 4wd to engage without moving the vehicle. the engagement dogs on the gears are only about 1/8 to 1/4" in width.

No overdrive in it. I am having the rover sent to a local shop that has a guy who owned a series and seems good.

He also happens to be a transmission specialist and isnt charging to much for diagnostics.

To cold for me outside and no real workable area.

I will update when I know more.
