The only reason I can think of is for looks, the 16" wheel and tire just makes the truck look sharper. good luck. If you do get new wheels think about power coating them, llook great and they do not rust or wear easliy.

Keep in mind that using 16" wheels means that you can upgrade to larger diameter tires and may affect your rpm's (problem if ou have a weak motor). Larger wheels=Larger tires=more ground clearance:thumb-up:

I bought new 16" wheels for my 88" mainly because I wanted a different offset (slightly wider). I am running 7.50 x 16 tires which are almost the exact diameter of 235/18-16's that many people run (32" I think).

If all you want to do is run a larger tire, I think there are tires that will fit the 15" rim and be close to 32" diameter. So you don't necessarily need to buy new rims.

I have been facing this dilemma for the last two years while my truck has not been roadworthy. It is sitting on original 15" wheels with 15+ year old tires. A friend convinced me to upgrade to 16s. So I purchased original 16" wheels that turned out to be too skinny for the 235/85/16 tires I also purchased.

Now I am considering selling off everything I have purchased thus far and going with a 33x10.5x15 or a 31x10.5x15 which are wider than what originally came with the trucks. Or going very old school with some bias ply 7.00x15s.

Something to keep in mind is that the 15" wheels are lighter and will give the truck slight better performance in terms of acceleration and braking.

Also, the factory 15" wheels are 6 inches wide which makes it easier to fit wider tires if you are going for that look. The standard 16s are 5.5 inches wide with some 16s (the ones I purchased of course) being 5 inches wide.

Roverdog, your '65 88 left the factory on 16" wheels, and 7.00x16 tires. It was only the last of the 2As and series 3s that had 15" wheels from the factory. Wheel diameter and tire OD are not tied hand-in-hand, when measuring radial tires. 235x85R16 looks very good, truck performs fine, and that's the same as 7.50x16"
If you can split atoms with a chisel and hammer, you might notice the difference in performance between 15" wheels and 16" wheels.
