Gover was a daily driver for 6 years but now spends her time pushing snow, pulling firewood, and wheeling. How about you all?

I pull mine around with our Yukon and have been trying to make it self sufficient, almost there.

Mostly, I've been using mine as a high tech '60's style storage system for crap in my garage.

I use mine as my weekend driver. Firewood, home depot etc. It did have my Miller welder in the back for a couple of years - made it ride a lot smoother.Ian

say Grover do you have some better photos of your plow mount.

Grover73
01-20-2008, 09:47 PM
The plow mount is homemade and go's on and off the truck in about 2 min. It's held on by the two tow hooks and two bolts to the underside of the winch mount. It's nice and light and the weight of the plow holds it on. All I need now is a pully so the rope doesn't fray. You can't beat a rover for pushing snow.

Here's some pics:

Thanks Iam making one for my 109 SIII. I used to put on Western snowplows for a dealer up here and made a very nice mount for my 1963 scout that look like a factory western mount. I would have bought one but by that time thay were no longer made. I have a meyers plow now Iam going to fab up to fit this rover.

Mine is driven daily as it is now my only personal vehicle since I was fortunate enough to sell my S-10. My wife drives a Venture van but that leaves shortly for a new replacement of some sort.

My two '66 II-A's are used for daily driving and transport, and for work. Mine hauls firewood, helps remove blown down trees from summer properties, hauls lawn mowers, weedwhackers, gravel and loam for lawn care on summer properties, and carpentry tools, sheetrock, lumber, etc., for caretaking projects. I can go days never going faster than 35 mph, and sometimes, just in low range.

One II-A has new tires, a galvanized frame, a Fairey overdrive, a Mansfield heater, better brakes and newer ancillaries, so it gets used also whenever I have to travel on the mainland for work.

Mines a daily driver and general runabout when the other vehicles aren't working. If it's dirty, heavy or smelly it goes in the IIA.

I have used her to commute 1000 miles a week in the Arizona summer and then yesterday drove her about 350 miles to take my malamute doggie up to Flagstaff for a day in the snow. Other weekends she'll take me off to the boonies for some camping or to haul my dh bike up into the mountains. It's also hauled masonry blocks and bags of premix mortar for home projects.

It's my go anywhere, do anything truck.

Mods:
- Bestop jeep seats for some more leg room and comfort.
- Tuffy center console
- Roverdrive.
- RM transfer case bottom plate.
- RM parabolics
- RM spin on oil filter adapter.
- Halogens lights.
- Electronic ignition and Magnecor leads.
- Some Funky Delco alternator with external mechanical regulator.
- Various electrical mods to add relays and fuses.
- Exmoor Trim molded floor, bulkhead and seat box mat.
- K&N filter for thrashing on the freeway.

In all it makes it a perfectly useable, fairly comfortable, reliable every day vehicle. And NO COMPUTERS!

Cheers

That very same thing happened to me with my 88 and my 39 Ford. Fortunately, I nabbed the kids with rocks in hand, called the cops, had the parents (nearby) hustled to the house by the cops and collected in cash (after providing an estimate). My heart goes out to you man.

1978 through 1992, The Green Rover worked as a ranch vehicle AND a commute vehicle.

As a ranch vehicle, her winch spent more time helping to string fence and occasionally rescuing my Ford 641 tractor than rescuing stuck 4X4s. Every weekend she went to the feed store and was loaded with 7 bales of hay plus a few large bags of grains. Once a month she was backed up to stalls and loaded to the roof line in fresh manure/bedding a couple times then hosed out afterwards. She also took livestock to the vet, out for breeding, to the fair & as needed.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LR.images/GRgoats.JPEG
Returning from the fair around 1986

In addition to the farm work she drove me to and from work. About 45 miles each way over a mountain range. 5 days a week every week for almost 2 decades until I got the Triumph TR3A rebuilt and drivable.

From sometime in late 1992 through 1996 The Green Rover was a bad weather commute car, and was used increasingly for camping. A life of leasure for my Land Rover. Then in the fall of 1996 I came home from Eastern oregon with a damaged Dormobile kit salvaged from a wrecked Land Rover Dormobile.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LR.images/GR_preDormi.jpg

It took me a year of work to rebuild The Green Rover into a long range expedition Dormobile.

1997 and into 2008 she has been mostly used for traveling here and there:

Thats a nice post TA! Of course I know where to go if I want to find out more about your trucks adventures. :thumb-up:

I took a quick re-read of my previous post and noticed a botch. The Rovers North tow hitch was mounted after the damage from pulling that huge trailer. So the damage likely won't occur next time I've got to move it as this tow hitch is SO MUCH BETTER than what I had before.

Tim

Daurie,

Did you purchase this truck from a gentleman in Florida named Clive? If so, you've got yourself one HEK of a truck!!! Wheeled alongside it and was the truck that made me set my search for a Defender aside and purchase my Series.

Daurie, would you happen to have a side profile photo of your series 3? I'm in the middle of painting mine and can't decide on whether to paint the rear window section on the top limestone, like yours, or paint them pastel green. I've beeen looking for a photo everywhere but haven't had any success. Thank You.

Heres a pic from when I bought it. I have considered painting my sides the same color as the rest and leaving the top limestone.

Howdy Tim,

The tires I use (front and rear) are LT215/85/R16. A 10ply commercial truck radial. The tread block are ciped so snow and ice traction is excellent. Brand new they look like this:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/gudjeon/RoverPics05054.jpg
I ordered them 3 years ago from Katona Tire in Vancouver, BC. They are remanufactured from intact casings, not retreads. When I bought them they were around $100 CAN each. No enviro levy because they were remans:thumb-up:. Quiet on the pavement. Grip the snow and ice well and lets it climb like a mountain goat. My first pic was taken at the summit of a 6800ft mountain top with lots of shale to get there. I have used lug mud treads in the past and have settled on these for a good all arounder. They will probably dry rot off the rims before they wear out on a ser1.

Jon, Do those tires have all steel casing?? I run 265/85 16 Michelin XPS Tractions on my truck and was considering them for my Rover but was hesistant because of the steel sidewalls. Not sure how the ride would be and how it would do aired down.

I know one thing, its one heavy tire!

Howdy Daurie,

Heres a link to the Katona Tire site where I bought them from:

http://www.katonatires.com/products/basic.shtml

Their technology is not a bunch of BS like some auto stuff. They are great and I wouldn't hesitate to go with them again. I do believe there is steel belting, as for it being bead to bead steel . I mounted them myself and they are a stiff. I don't air down my tires as I mostly drive on rocky surfaces. How they work for that I don't know. Probably would be safer with tubes for that at low speeds. I run them tubeless on the original ser1 rim.

Caveat: I do not work for them and I don't get compensated for testimonial (I wish)

Hello Ryan.. I remember the "Grover" from many years ago when the CT "Yankee Rovers" club was in existance. It's good to see it's still around. My SIII was also on the road then too.. Not the case any more.. still being rebuilt.

That a nice simple plow frame set up.. nice fabrication work. Does it have struts further back on the chassis? It sure lifts the plow up high

You write:.. " You can't beat a rover for pushing snow."

Well maybe?? this is what I use (see attatched).. Power steering is nice as well as a tight turing radius.

And here is a shamless plug for an ebay Item I have listed. Its an older but working, 2-way western hydraulic lift/pump assembly.
