I've done some research on the with of a stock 16" rim and it sounds like it came in two flavors, 6" and 6.5", but has anyone heard of anything wider? Say, between 6.5" and 7"?

Thanks-

There were 16x7s made but they were pretty unusual. Ive only seen them offered as a dealer option on north american trucks.

Hey Ike,

Interesting. Why the extra width for the NA dealers?

I wasn't there for that meeting. However, I think Dick Cepek offered wider rims through rover dealerships in the 60s. Most of the ones Ive seen came from dealerships in the western US. Wide 15s were available as well. I have some OEM 15x8s which is another rare wheel type.

The reason could have been the availability of tires sizes. Just a thought.

Kind of, but you could get stock sized tires. During the 60s/70s new tire sizes became available and oversized tires were becoming popular, companies like armstrong, desert dog and others were selling larger sizes that would not fit stock rims. The wider rims probably catered to those folks who wanted these new tires.

What size tire are you running on these rims?

If you dont care if they are "series rover wheels", the sky is the limit. Plenty of aftermarket and factory rims for the coilsprung trucks in that range which will work.

255/85/16 BFG Mudterrain. Spec'ed at 33.3" dia. I've decided this will be my maximum diameter tyre. Any taller and I would not be able to easily get in wearing a tight skirt.

And they are Genuine Land Rover Series I rims ;)

And if you get curious about the funny looking drive flanges, they are hardened steel drive flanges on Great Basin hardened Salisbury axles. :thumb-up:
