Well less than 500 miles and a detent spring has broken on the leading edge in my 3/4 syncro again. I inspected the remaining springs and, like the ones I took out last time, they are wearing on the front edge right in the bend where they hang over the syncro hub. The contact is happening when I shift into 4th gear and the hub is shifted forward. The springs seem to be longer than they would need to be. When I get them in place I have maybe 1/8" hanging over the edge of the hub on either end and the bent end of the spring is just hanging out there. If the springs were shorter I believe it would hold them more centralized and it would not make the contact thats causing the breakage.

The syncro is operating fine and I don't believe it has any excess wear. I'm suspecting a non original syncro with original springs possibly. It could be a manufacturing variation that requires specific detent springs. I'm hoping someone who has knowledge of this issue will chime in.

I have a complete original syncro on order from RN but it wont be here for a week or so due to some backordered items.

Of course my lease was up and I turned in my car this past Friday and what happens Monday?? Go figure.

Thanks in advance!

No ideas on this? I guess everyone is as stumped as I, on this one.

I'm baffled, too, but the only transmission I've rebuilt is the one in my II-A. I have not had the problems you outlined with the detent springs. Wish I could help.

Is it possible to get the Gearbox Serial number?
There are early and late 3/4 synchro assy's, though either will fit, some experience jumping out of gear.

I will get that SN asap. I haven't had any problem with it jumping out of gear though. I bit the bullet and ordered a new 3/4 syncro. I can't seem to find a good picture of a syncro to look at and compare.

So here are the pictures of what I'm dealing with. You can see in the image of the syncro where it's shifted into 4th (forward) how much the springs hang over. Also note how one spring appears to be more centralized. They don't always slip forward and rearward and the spring that appears more forward is hanging over on the front as much as the opposite one is hanging back, if you follow me. You can see in the picture of the syncro in 3rd (rearward) how the spring hangs over as well in this position. This is the part that wears and eventually breaks as you can see in the picture of the broken spring. Les, there is the SN off the box. There are some other numbers on the side of the case FRC1809CA from what I can tell.

Thanks, Daurie
