History of the horn placement?

I was driving today and found myself wondering why land rover decided to place the horn control on the end of the left stalk? It's a silly question, but as an owner of both a classic lwb and a d-90 it is a quirk that I have always pondered about. I have many theories as to why they might have put it there but I was curious if anyone out there has a real answer. I know several other manufacturers, such as peugot have done the same. Has anyone else wondered why?

I once heard this placement justified because, supposedly, folks in Europe approach intersections at night flashing their lights and blowing their horn. This placement allows them to do both with one hand. No idea if this is true.

Makes since to me. Who knows, I'm still in search of a definent answer. I like that one for now though
