    coil question

I have a silly question about the coil on my new 1964 Series IIa 88". The guy who was restoring it was not really knowledgable and I have found several simple mistakes he made in putting things together. Currently the coil is mounted upside down in the engine compartment (connections pointed down). My mechanic friend says this is bad for the coil and will eventually lead to failure. Currently everything works fine, so should I bother turning it "right side up" or is that just an old wive's tale? Is there a difference in the way the coil is mounted?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Pointed downward...

...is the factory setup for your series. There a lots of pics in prior posts showing its mounting orientation in the engine.

Mounting it facing upwards will not increase your karma, or ascend you further into the heavens.

Ah now, coil orientation is dictated by the side of the road you drive on. On a rhd drive pointed down is the way to go. Land Rover, being lazy as usual and wanting revenge for the revolution, never turned the coil the right way up for LHD production at the factory. This is why your 2.25 feels so slow and anemic. Turning it the right way up will add 50hp and get you over 30mpg.

        Hmmm I need more coffee

        Cheers

Why not take the liberal view and lay the coil sideways, as on Series III?

Leaving it connection side down will help keep the smoke in the system because as we all know, smoke rises. Thats my .02$.
