FJ Event in Colorado

All,

I run an event out in Colorado (Ouray) that is now in its second year. We've grown tremendously (312 vehicles currently with 658 people coming, and a wait list). I'm pretty proud of what it has grown into. We'd love to have some Rover people there if you're able to attend. There will be tech sessions, trail runs, and a great group of people. Please stop by if you're in the area July 16-20th.

I'll vouch for the Black Bear Pass and all surrounding trails in the Colorado San Jaun Mountains are awesome, 2001 Solihull Society Nationals.

FWIW... If you do go down Black Bear Pass (can't go up...) make sure the weather is NOT wild. We got caught out on the lower switchbacks with a quick thunder storm. I couldn't even imagine that happening while on the rocky steps up top - holy crow'age.

Also... the week after we left, I heard that a J**p with four occupants surrendered their souls to the rocky crags of Black Bear Pass trail when wet. It is that gnarly.

I refused to do Black Bear last year, though we had many people do the runs. It's even more scary when you're the organizer and these people are sort of under 'your umbrella.' Glad we're insured well!

Ahyup, pucker point. Here I am piloting my Defender 90 with my entire family in it including my 4 year old daughter! Krickey.

I'm sure glad that I spent my early years growing up (19-25) learning what to do off-road and what NOT to do. Back in the 1980s we had way modded Toyota 4WD and Isuzu 4WD LUV pick-ups and spent loads of time at Clear Creek/New Idria area and the Rubicon beating them up. We even made our own trail up the backside up Mt. Pluto at Northstar North of Kings Beach North Shore Tahoe!!

As you can see, this trail required everything and every trick I learned. I had to pull out all the stops. Thank god I was in a Land Rover Defender doing it with a locked up center diff. We were told NOT to take a Defender 110 down because of how tight the switchbacks were. We didn't listen and made it fine :-)

I don't think they are ugly. Every truck has it's goods and bads. My own airportable has to be one of the ugliest creations ever conceived. It's so ugly in fact that it's kind of pretty. :p

I do think the FJ's might be hard to see out of with the little windows and rounded corners but maybe I'm just portraying some of my own visibility issues onto that design.

Gotta say, I've never seen an FJ modded. That the gray one in those shots has a pretty cool looking bumper. Kind of pretty it's so ugly. :p

Good luck with the summit. You are too far away for me but I am going to be trying to make National Rally this year.

I have to disagree, I bought one of the first FJs in MA and loved it. That said, I sold it the minute I found my SIIA. The new FJ is great, but an old Rover is...perfect.

I like doing trail runs with folks driving different rigs. If you're ONLY hanging out with Rover folks, you'll keep seeing the same ideas and things over and over. Everytime I hang with Jeep guys or my neighbor with an old Dodge, I see something interesting that I could possibly use on the rover.
