filler plugs for diff and gear box

I'm having difficulty removing the the fill plugs on the differentials and gear box. Is there a specific tool that should be used? I'm trying to use a couple different lugs but plugs are square (vs. hexagonal) so I'm concerned about stripping them. SHould I be concerned?

Also, once I have them off, any idea how much fluid I should add? Its rather an awkward position and I'm not sure if over-filling them is a problem.

    Regards,

    Marco

A 13mm or 1/2 inch open ended spanner will undo them just fine. The large square peg on the plug takes some stripping. The universal application of PB blaster or equivalent can help. Use as long a spanner as you can get in there as the extra torque makes it less likely to strip.

They are fill/level plugs so, with the truck parked on a flat surface, keep adding until it starts to dribble out the hole. Have a rag handy.

    Cheers
