Hello,

I want to install a warn 8274 winch to the front of my stock 94 discovery. It has the stock brush guard and hella lights. I will move the lights.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to modify the stock brush guard to accept the old warn winch. if so, some pictures would be great. I want it to look nice.

If I can't pull it off, I will have to sell the winch and buy one of the newer horizontal style winches with one of thos ARB brush guards. But I like the stock look and I have owned the winch for 20 years! Is it healthy to be attached to an old winch?

Thanks In advance-
Todd in southern Maine.

This can be built, however the fabrication required will mean you need to remove most of the front and build up a winch cradle that mounts directly to the chassis specifically for the Warn 8274 size and requirments. Proper winch recovery points will need to be built into the frame mounted cradle too. Then, you will need to build the original stock pieces back over this to fit, time and professional fabrication required. The Warn 8274 is indeed a great old winch, but not really the best for the horizontal front-end design of the Land Rover Discovery. The other aspect of the 8274 being vertical will be that it may block necessary cooling air through the radiator, depending upon how you mount it of course.

An alternative idea...
If you are looking for having a winch with a stock look and being able to retain your original brush guard and original bumper I would suggest the Warn 9.5 Ti portable winch and a front Rovers North Class III receiver hitch mount that fits under the bumper. Any time you install a winch, (removable or fixed) your suspension needs to be capable of handling the extra loads that will placed on it. A heavy duty suspension is recommended. A good plus is that the 9.5 Ti can also be taken off the front and used out in the rear in a rear Class III hitch mount as well.

Also... You can of course go for the ARB front bumper and winch combination. This is a proven setup.

Just an inspirational fyi for custom winch mounting... back in 2000, Rovers North built up for a customer a one-off Camel Trophy replica with as much as we could. With the exception of not having the 200 Tdi, real battle scars, sand glow paint and decals, the build came out very nice. Here are some photos of the front winch mounting fabrication required. The Superwinch Husky is a horizontal design and lends itself much better to this application.

Thanks-
I might have to come to the realization that the old Warn 8274 might not be the best for my disco 1.

Thanks for the photos!
