I took pictures almost daily. I found parts on 3 continents and restored it to as close to orig. as possible. Every nut and bolt was replaced. The engine was rebuilt 15k miles prior to my project so I left that alone.

Intro & pics

My name is Rich Lambert and I live in Granite Falls, WA. I picked up my first Land Rover off CL last week. It's a '58 Series II 88". I've always wanted an old Land Rover and this one seems like a good starting point. I say starting point because it sat outside under trees for 10 years, doesn't run, and has some frame rot issues, but I went into this looking for a project.

When I first brought it home, after a wash.

Petrol engine & rat's nest wiring. I spent about 6 hours sorting out the wiring mess. When I started I had right blinkers and one wiper. Now, everything works but the one wiper. The AC Delco alternator threw me for a loop as my schematic had some other model with different wiring.

Congrats! Looks like a typical rover.:D

Since you wrote that it currently is in a no run condition. I'd recommend starting with the ignition. Make sure the points, condenser, distributor cap, rotor button, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and (very importantly) the low tension lead are all in good condition before doing any other service. the timing should be set or checked too.

Replace all the fluids. Oil and oil filter and radiator coolant. Make sure the engine will turn over by hand.

The ignition is the most important system of the engine to have working soundly it will stop the rig before anything else. Don't do anything to the carb till the ignition is solid. The most overlooked thing is always the low tension lead. That little 2" piece of wire IS the most important wire on the whole truck. Seeing by your pictures that you have the early style distributor I strongly recommend making sure that little wire is in good condition.

If you already know all this then...

HAPPY ROVERING!

HAPPY ROVERING!

I'd argue that oil pump is the most important system on the engine. Before you get carried away making sparks and trying to start it you want to make sure you have oil flowing where it should. Starting an engine after that length of time without priming the oil system is going to lead to some nasty wear at least and terminal destruction at worst.

Pull the valve cover and dizzy, buy or make a tool that runs on a drill and turns the oil pump shaft. Look for oil coming out the rocker shaft.

If you feel adventurous it doesn't hurt to pull the sump which is probably leaking anyway and then inspect the bearings.

There's plenty of info out there about bringing an engine back from extended hibernation but, of course, if you already know it....

Thanks for the input, but I should have been more specific. The PO said the throttle stuck wide open while his his daughter was driving it and the engine started making metallic sounds. He said it's probably just bent valves, pushrods, and maybe the timing chain skipped a tooth. If I was the optimistic type, I'd believe him. When I delve into that, the first thing I'm going to do is to drain the oil and see if there's any important looking things in there. I'll also pull the pan and the head and see what's going on. I'm hoping for the best, but...

When I bought my last project, the owner said it ran good one minute and bad the next. I hoped for the best that time too, but found a big hole in the #5 piston caused by the valve head breaking off and banging around between the head and the CC about a thousand times. I think the PO failed to mention he pulled a money shift from 3rd to 2nd and over-rev'd the engine.

I did find why the throttle on the LR stuck open:
One of the bolts on the many pinch clamps was turned the wrong way and the nut was wedging itself into a bracket at WOT.

That would have been okay, but one end of the return spring was connected to the wrong place, so that when the nut was wedged into the bracket, the fully extended spring pulled one of the many rods into a binding position.

None of that would have happened if the clamp that connects to the pedal hadn't been adjusted so that the linkage could reach that binding position. At WOT the throttle plate in the carb was opening about half way. No wonder she floored it.

Could they have made that linkage any more complicated? I suppose once it's set-up you never have to touch it again, but some PO touched it.

Finally got things to where I want them. This one has some interesting features like the bumpers with outriggers and d-shackles, screw on glass beehive lamps, and convoy light receptacles. I added sliders from Ike Goss, a tailgate from Rocky Mountain, some old badges from the UK, and had it painted bronze green.

You will notice there's no fuel filler tube and I was quite embarrassed to call Matt Browne and ask him how to fuel it up. This was after I attempted to pick it up one night and didn't know how to start it with the choke, starter button, etc. And to top it off, my wife had to drive it home since I'd never driven a standard and she learned to drive on a Series III.

It's been fun poking around with it and I have since taught my son to drive it. Not sure what to do with it now. It wants to be driven but there's not a lot of time for that.

We were also curious about the carburetor. The single barrel carb was replaced with a double barrel. Does anyone know if there was a benefit to having the dbl barrel vs. the single?

Welcome aboard. Yes, this is the 'Show me a nice pic of your truck' thread.

There was a busy thread on engine paint color a little while ago:

http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3720

I'm sure someone here would be happy to talk carbs as well (short story: more barrels in the carb = more and better fuel/air mixture = more get-up-and-go. Also, the intake manifold would have been changed along with the carb.).

Your message let me with questions. Does this engine have a spin on oil filter or a canister type and does the top of the intake manifold say Pierce?

The 2 barrel carb should have an ID molded to the top. Is it labeled Weber 32/36 DGV, Weber 32/34 DMTL or something else?

The reason I ask is that the Land Rover 2.5L petrol engine is red and comes with a 2 barrel Weber. There is the possibility that someone upgraded the engine in the past.

And yes this is probably not the best place to put this question, but its here and I'll play it as it lays. :D

Hello TeriAnn, thank you for your reply.

Our Rover has the canister type oil filter and yes the top of the manifold does say pierce. We purchased the Rover from a friend who purchased it brand new and at some point changed out the carburetor to the current one which is a Weber 711 F FB A-2F-16. The motor is the original 2.25L, can't tell exactly what color it was, maybe black or maybe it wasn't painted at all?? Now as of today....... the accessories are black and the block is soon to be RED, I got my way :-). May not be the color most Rover owners would choose but for some reason I wanted the block red.

By the way, a while back I ran across your website and drooled over your Dormobile :thumb-up: and envied your adventures, today I am actually conversing with you - how cool is that!

Thanks again!

Ive had this old girl since 1998, she was in LROI shortly thereafter, when the previous owners story was published. Originally imported into Canada in 1958, this S2 spent years on a farm....and was rescued and restored in the mid 90s.

Cool thing is, this is an early S2 and still has the original 2 liter IOE engine!!

Well I finally took the plunge and got myself a Series IIa. Purchased it on Friday from a gentleman who used it as a work truck on a farm for 20 years before he retired. He then restored it and build it up for overlanding with all the bells and whistles. New high performance engine, full syncro gearbox, locking differentials, coil conversion and safari rack.
Fuel economy is phenomenal and reliability has been very unlike a Landrover.
My wife and I hope to get this out on a trip soon to see how it performs.
Thanks,

Update on my '58 S2. I introduced my truck a few pages back...it looked like this.

Present state, in order to deal with the frame rot. I think the rust is limited to the rear of the frame (both sides), but I'm going to pressure wash it tomorrow to see for sure. I'm hoping to get away with the 18" rear repair piece.

A '66 911 actually.

I got the pressure washing done and although it still looks like crap, there were no nasty surprises and I can see what I'm dealing with now.

Next, I ordered some rust converter and rust encapsulator from Eastwood that I'll apply back to the point where the frame will be cut off for the replacement piece and after that's in, I'll finish it. I've never used this stuff before, so we'll see what happens.

I have been very happy with the Rust Encapsulator from Eastwood. The Converter works well, but only on actual rust. From the looks of the chassis, you have a nice consistent surface rust, so the Converter should work well. See if you can use a wand to spray the inside of the chassis as well.
For the Encapsulator, the spray cans are very convenient, but expensive. I found that buying a quart and using Preval sprayers is the way to go.

There are only a few things you can do on a series truck which return that instant gratification, like cleaning the transfercase. Watching the dirt and grime peel away like a bananna is great, right?

Hard part is keeping it that way. ;)

Nice work. Go ahead and start a thread on your rebuild.

She's got a lot of little dings on the body, but not too much rust.

The decals are from some rally that she participated in, at least two previous owners back. Maybe it was for the 50th anniversary of Land Rover?

Not running all that well currently. I really think the engine has had it, so I'll be doing a rebuild (my first.) I'll be sure to post pics of the project. She's sporting a new hi-range gearbox from RN though. :thumb-up:

Well, Here she is... a work in progress. I've had this Rover for years, but am just now getting around to giving her proper treatment. 1964, IIA located in Albuquerque, NM. I just finished up the Front Suspension (RN parabolics, OME, Polybusings) and am getting ready to remove the rear tub and tackle the rear springs as well. I'm sure I'll get grief from you guys, but I'm deathly afraid of removing the bulkhead and going all the way down to the frame (too many I/Os to mess with, electrical, hydraulic, gauges, linkages...). So, I rebuilt the front end and gave it a fresh coat of high gloss black. It's not a Councours restoration, but I don't plan to drive it in a Pebble Beach kind of way! The members of this forum have made this project a joy for me. Thanks to all of you for your continued advice and feedback. -Brian

From that picture you cannot tell. The 2wd drive axle was pretty much the same as the stock front from the swivel ball flange on out. They actually had a funky little shaft in the swivel to act as an oil thrower to keep the king pins lubed so they still used the stock hub caps.

I thought it looked familiar...I just watched the youtube videos of the trip a few days ago. Looks like a great time. I'm amazed at how the relatively enormous vehicles tend to do quite well on those trips. I'm less than amazed at how poorly BMW sedans do, however.

Back on topic (well, closer anyway):

Tim, Why is it that fairly stock airportables look so much more bad-arse than any other fairly stock series rovers?? My rover is getting very nervous and requests that you and everyone else with one, stop posting pics of your airportables! :nono:

Not completely stock but it does the job.

Just so you folks know, my truck is actually in serious need of repair. More to come on that later and in another post. But true to the series truck nature, it still gets me where I want to be and I'm happy for it. Even if I'm whiffing blue smoke from the dash and floorboards.

I found it on craigslist. The Rover was well hidden behind the house, so not visible at all from the road, which is why I think it sat un-noticed for 25 yrs. But believe me, it really wasn't fun getting it out. I hadn't used my hi-lift jack for a while and found out it was seized, so my only jack was a little hydraulic jack w/ very little lift. It took forever jacking the front end up a few inches at a time and blocking to get under the sunk front end. And once I was finally able to drag it rearward a few feet, I found that the left front wheel was frozen. I struggled with it for a while, but in the end the only way I could free it was taking the wheel off and breaking the drum in half with a sledge hammer.

yeah I'll post a few more pics. My interior looks identical to yours. I'm pretty sure mine was also parked very early on in its life - it was found out in a field. Someone bought it, thought they could tackle it, but didn't - threw it up on Ebay, I got it as a present as a parts truck....but I can't part it :)

So it sits, waiting to be restored. It'll happen to both of mine in the next few years, once things settle down a bit.

nice series III. do you work in Groton? I have seen your rig coming over the gold star bridge in the morning (7-ish), I was going the opposite direction on my way to school. The next day on my return home i saw your rig again... also going the opposite direction hahaha.

I take my top off from march till late october early november. We have nice summers here in CT.

I do work in Groton and around 7 is usually the time I'm going over the gold star. I was stationed here for 3 years prior to this 6 month stint so I knew what kind of weather to expect. I actually lived in Mystic back in '03-'05 but didn't have the rover sickness at the time.

I was digging thru the picture folder trying to free up some room on the HD and found this pic of Ronnie. Used Ronnie to pull over the tree to make room for a shed in the backyard. It went well. I had cut all the roots around the base of the tree and pulled the tree right over but there was still one root left that I had to cut through once the tree was down before I could fully remove the stump.

That was to hold the drivers door open while I was working on something, the door closed on my ankle a couple of times and so I tied a rope to the bumper and the door to hold it open. I left it there for a while, its gone now. My boyfriends Mom thought it was to hold the bumper up:)

I heard about the Australian grills from another Rover enthusiast. Apparently, when the series III came out in Australia there was a problem selling them because of the new plastic grill. The series II had the metal grill which could be taken off to use over a campfire. We all know how important the barbie (barbeque) is to the Australians.:thumb-up: I wonder if this grill was their answer?

Is it metal?

Well, I just got her home last night.... I drove her 24 miles in 37 degree F with no top. My kid said it was like being in a Indiana Jones movie. lol.
It is 1966 series 11a RHD with 39000 original miles. All the reciepts since new. It was bought from the original owner and has yet to be registered in the States. It got here to the states in 2000 and has been sitting in the gentlemans warehouse who shipped it here since. He started to clean her up a little with a few mechanical parts and paint etc. It came with the soft top bows and a hard top . She runs and sounds like a dream. Everything works except the wahers system....I have a bunch of parts in boxes still I need to go through. Everything is there and then some.

Look forward to pciking your brains for info and thaks for the site...

Thanks for the compliments. I was sort of hesitant to buy it since it had been re-sprayed. I like to know what I am getting into..but after looking it over....I could tell what it needed fairly quick. It is sort of hard to hide anything on these rigs. It is far form perfect but a good driver and future candidate for restore from what I can tell. The frame has had some repair work at one point in its life, at the rear spring mounting point. There is a doubler and it was re-welded in the wrong location. I hope it is not to hard to re-do.

Our Dog is liking it.

Hello,
Picked up a 1970 Series 2A RHD about 6 weeks ago. The prev owner bought it in the UK back in 2002. He shipped it to the states and drove it in Fl till 2004, in 04 he moved to Boone Nc and parked it till I picked it up. So it sat in a garage untouched for 5 years. He's moving to Seattle so I was able to pick it up cheap.
Got the truck, hard top, tail gate, wagon door and 4 boxes of misc parts. Some new parts like head light guards, 4 static seat belts and misc filters, gaskets and a fan belt. Also some old parts like all the stuff he took off but never reinstalled....mostly trim stuff but I did get a 2nd hood with the spare tire mount.

The motor was not locked up but all the brake fluid had drained out of the MC via the front brake cylinders. I spent 10-12 hours cleaning all the electrical connections, points, plugs, cap/rotor, drained 7 gallons of bad gas out of the tank, changed the oil/ filter and it fired up. Only spent 31 bucks, most of which was oil and gas, to get it running. It was so awesome to hear it run, purred like a kitten. Having heard it run I didn't mind sinking in a bunch of money to get the brakes working. Replaced all the cylinders, rubber hoses and rebuilt the MC.

It's been on the road the past 2 weeks and has been so much fun to drive. We have a very steep and twisty driveway, the day I finished the brakes we got 6" of snow. Figured what the hell, lets take it out. Very impressed with the 4x4, it tackled my driveway with ease both going up and down.

It's going to be my daily driver, we have a little land so it's also going to help around the house hauling wood. I have a whole list of stuff I want to do so I'll be posting for advise. Let me know if any of you guys are in NC.

G'day All,

my first post on this board - you have a great site going here, heaps of great info. It's great to see so many landy's getting such good treatment.

Here's mine - a previous owner has done a great job of refurbishing but there are plenty of non-standard bits that will eventually go away. I've been collecting parts for about 3 years and will soon start on reversing some of the mods. It's a ute (pickup I think you would say) but I really like the full canvas tilt option - I'm about to fit that up and see how it goes.

First one: '74, marine blue/limestone 88" hard top, Bought from a guy who ran the camera shop (who'd bought it from an RAF pilot that had brought it from his station in Iceland to the states) in North Conway in '91, for $1,500. Beautiful condition, except the engine. Tore the engine all the way down and back up.

Second one: Just about the time I got #1 put back together ('92), I heard about another Marine Blue, '74, 88" trop top - no joke, Behind a Barn. A guy I knew (had been my boss at my first job as a bagboy at Shaw's) had done some work on it for a guy, but never got paid, and the Rover got left. I got it for $50! Cosmetically it was rougher, and had no reverse, but after about 8 hours of work (mostly on clutch master/slave rebuild and disengaging a rusted clutch/flywheel) it ran great. I put off finishing #1, while I drove #2 to college 4 hours away (UMaine, Orono).

Alas, small Rover tragedies ensued: #1 was stored at buddy's radiator shop and he sold the shop. I was stuck at school (no time to get home, and a busted half-shaft), so eventually the first rover (with - seriously - thousands of dollars in three years of collected spares loaded into the back) was towed to a small JUNK(!) yard near Conway. I wonder if it's still there. Doubtful.

And #2 came with me as I followed a girl to North Dakota (damn redheads!) and 3 years later, when I moved to Illinois/Iowa, I had no way to bring it down with me, so it's probably still sitting where I left it in a tiny town south of Minot BEHIND A BARN!

Anyway, after having to let go of two Rovers, hopefully (pictured) is the happy ending to me finally ending up with some version of my dream car. A '73 nicely faded poppy red "hybrid" SIII with SIIa breakfast. Found this rare Midwestern specimen in Northwestern Wisconsin, up by Eau Claire. Land of cheese and beer. PO said this was the shop truck when he owned a British/foreign car shop in the area. They'd been in the process of doing a thorough (non-restoration-level) update, when he closed up shop. He sold the Rover to a friend of his, and it sat in his barn (with a ton of spares and two parts trucks) for 8 years before he sold it to me. He said the top was fabricated from the front half of a rover top and a ford (bronco?) liftgate. Said he hated the Rover bubble-top pickup cab. It looks like all the work was very well done. Oh, and it came with a Bellevue (pre-warn) Winch! (off the truck, on the list to be restored) A good bunch of wring is left to finish, and I've installed the ignition, the new gas tank it came with, the carb (now removed - see my other posts, maybe you can help!). and have added a few other parts that didn't come with. Hoping it's on the road by July. Still haven't sussed out the hydraulics, so we'll see.

Btw, to add to the drama, the sticker on the windshield is from the city of Davenport, IA, telling me to remove my "nuisance vehicle!" The city said a neighbor complained! One man's treasure .... Anyway, apparently shade-tree mechanic-ing is illegal in this town. Lame. Taken care of for now - no flat tires, and it's registered - they say they'll lay off unless someone else complains. We'll see.

Be careful of those 'nuisance vehicle' complaints. I had my '65 parked in my side yard for a number of years so that I wouldn't take up parking on the street. Tires full, registered and everything. Someone around the corner complained and if I hadn't taken care of it, once it was towed I could NEVER get it back and it would have been crushed.

To be fair to the people that complained, the guy who used to own this house was a huge jerk and they thought they were getting back at him.

get to know your nieghbors, engage their little rug rats in the wrenching. i live in a nice nieghborhood and had no issues when i stripped my 88 back to the seat box and painted the frame. whole process took over 5 months and included two days with a plastic paint tent over the front and all of this in the driveway.

Look at those 4" ambers! I have developed an unhealthy fixation for 4" amber lights. :)

Are those 4" ambers actually powered, or just reflective?

never checked to see if they were powered. Picked up the truck and dove right into the tear down. Pretty sure they have power (in theory) because they sure as hell don't reflect :) When its back together it won't be so much Lucas anymore.

Geez, just trying to make a joke about Lucus...guess i need to use this :D when I do. To fully answer your question, Those are the turn signals and are also activated when the 4-way flashers come on. Of course with Lucus electrics there is a chance that won't happen :D

We've all read them...but to go along with the joke (we don't have to insert anymore)...here is my favorite one.

Back in the 70's, Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which did not suck.

QUESTION: "Are those 4" ambers actually powered, or just reflective?"

ANSWER: "Lucus electrics....what do YOU think?"

That's funny! :D As bmohan suggests, anyone who has been around Rovers for a while knows the answer is often "neither." :D:D

I saw this pic online of this pair of Lightweights (not mine), I love both colors... and I am trying to pick a new color for a lightweight. Currently Jac04's is my favorite, but am wondering if anyone can tell what these two official colors may be by any chance ??

thanks

Thanks Clive, I'll need to dive deeper on that ref page, as first blush its not obvious what the spec on the light tan/cream vehicle may be in the pic shown here... assuming it is even one of the original colors itself.

appreciated, mike

I have sold my 73 SIII that I restored. I did such a good job that I did not want to drive it in the snow / salt / rain ect yet loved to drive it. I decided to buy another, 1974 SIII, and this one is now may daily driver. I really like driving it every day. I'm also real close to buying another one, I'll post pics if, hopefully when, I get it. As my friend says I have an obsession, can't argue you get addicted to these "THINGS" as my wife calls them.
I have replaced a rotted rear door w/ a tailgate / liftgate (thanks Ike)
and have some RM door tops to install after I replace the windscreen which I have. It has a galv frame, 8:1 head, Weber DGV carb, electronic ignition, mechanically very tidy, runs great.

let the new games begin...What color is that? The color has to be the spitting image of mine and I was told it was a Mazda color. Or something to that effect.

Not really sure what the color is officially. It is a RHD and has only been in the US a little over 1 yr, and it is not a great paint job. I plan to get stripping soon, and possibly go for Desert Sand...

Here's my first Rover, it's a 74 Diesel RHD, imported ~6 years ago. Has a Fairey Overdrive (afraid to try it out), had a hard top w/ safari rack. Just removed it and installed a bikini top from a CJ7.

To do:
-Have starter/solenoid rebuilt - to eliminate bypass switches
-Rebuild spare rear axle - to get rid of leaky axle tube
-Locate or build a rear tail gate
-Have a 4-point roll bar built and add mounts for retractable shoulder belts
-Remove top halves of doors (bolts rusted solid)

Think that's about it for now. Doesn't look anywhere near as good in person as the photos. Rippled body panels, runs in the paint, hood that is no where near straight, cracked seals, etc etc. But it's fun to drive around and gets TONS of attention. We took it to the local concert series Friday night and had 5 people piled in it.

This weekend after removing the top:
