Having just built my fist series, It really helps to see what other people have done with their Rovers. Some ideas I loved and went for , others I thought I would love, but didn't after seeing done.

Your truck looks like mine Bear!
I am looking at your 16" wheels and tire size! Nice! Do they work for you?
What kind of tires are they?
Also I see that you have your seat belts attached to the rear bulkhead rail.
I should probably do that so if I want to take the top off I can.
I am about to mount the belts on brackets that are on the top side.
Any advice!
Thanks for sharing! Looks like you have a very nice place too!

Hi Andrew!

Nice truck Bear. As much as I love the Goat, it is so far from stock that I now want to add a bone stock IIA to the barn for nostalgia, particularly a 109 5 door.

I haven't done anything with a list of mods in a few years so I'll probably miss a few.

Side view taken 10 years ago in Eastern Montanna
http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/snapshots/snaps/GRsnow.jpg

The vehicle: 1960 109 regular converted to a Dormobile in 1996-97. Lots of worn out parts were replaced with newer model Series parts.

Brakes: Dual circuit power brakes from a SIII. Rocky Mountain front disc brakes

Drive train: 1970 Ford 302 with 1991 Mustang 5.0 fuel injection. Custom aluminum radiator, Mercedes V8 electric fan, Borg Warner T-18 gearbox, Series transfercase with Ashcroft high ratio kit, Custom Great basin rear propshaft, Rear Salisbury moved 1-1/2 inch rearwards from the stock location, ARB air locker, Great Basin hardened rear axles. Front end is Rover with Range Rover Classic pumpkin, Trutrac limited slip carrier, SeriesTrek 24 spline front axles. Front propshaft is custom Great Basin Rovers with narrower than stock dia, long slip joint and high angle yolks. 4.75:1 R&P. Wheels are Dicovery steel wheels with 255/85R16 BFG Mud Terrains (33.3" dia).

Suspension: One ton springs with sheets of high density plastic layered between each spring leaf. The result is a strong spring with the vertical movement virtually identical to parabolics with very little side sway. Extend shackles (6 degree wedge under front axle to correct kingpin angle) and great basin greasable poly bushings.

Power steering using a Scout II steering box.

Fluids: 2 front under seat fuel tanks plus a rear fuel tank for a total fuel capacity of 42 gallons.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LR.images/GRrearfiller98.JPEG
Rear tank filler parts came from a D110 heavy duty & were supplied by Rovers North

Built in 15 gallon drinking water tank, built in 5 gallon propane tank and a 2-1/2 gallon compressed air tank filled from a Quickair2 compressor.

Body: rear side behind wheel trimmed horizontal for more clearance (I kept bending the bottom coming off rocks), diamond plate attached to bottom skirts, I haven't needed sliders yet but occasionally scrape things with the side skirts. Series III left inner wing panel for clearance of the power brake system.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/GRdetailPics/NewWing.jpg
Outer wing panels are for an Euro spec early Defender (no holes for side lights). In the above picture you can see a Donaldson horizontal mount canister air filter and prefilter mounted to the underside of the wing top.

http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LR.images/GRleftFillers98.JPEG
Above picture 2008 on the California Mojave trail

Hard top sides are the front of an 88 windowless side and the rear of an 88 sliding window side connected together to make a 109 regular side with sliding windows. In the picture, the front filler is for the left front fuel tank and the one behind it is for the water tank. All the parts behind the cap have been replaced for the water system. The rear lift gate has been side hinged so I don't catch my hair going in & out of the rear.

The roof of course came from a wrecked Dormobile as did most of the interior. The interior would be a would different subject, but includes toilet, bed, 2 sinks stove & refrigerator

No, we were splashing around in Lake Ontario, a couple hours east of Toronto. Just about everything on my 88 is galvanised but I still wouldn't take it into salt water like that.

some may have seen Blueboy on other sites, yet, these are from our recent trip to P.E.I. (Red Lane) and parts of NE (Mt Wash Auto Rd).

basically Blueboy is a NADA SIIa 109 wagon sitting on a 110 frame and drivetrain.

we use the Rover for travels all over and mild off-highway work.

usually have 2 - 4 paw drive Rovers with us.

Nice ride, man!

Yes, the grill is incorrect for a SIII, I took the artistic liberty to mount a IIa grill. I’ll not claim it’s a total correct restoration, just my interoperation of one. Though fret not, the original SIII “plastic grill” hangs in distinction on my den wall and push come to shove could be mounted on the truck in short order.

<Swiss spec> required the instillation of a Undershield ( gearbox skid plate) sound proofing under the bonnet and rubber skirting within the front wheel well.
I did not go back with the bonnet insulation, seemed to me it would collect moisture and make the bonnet frame more vulnerable to rot.

Almost…..They’re the newer style oem mud flaps that I painted the lettering on…
..( School bus yellow from the local craft store)

The older original style flaps the letters are recessed into the rubber where the ones supplied theses days have raised lettering and the material is not quite as stiff/dense. In truth the front flaps should be about half length of the rear and without lettering. But after installing the lettered flaps on the rear and liking the looks I could not resist the vanity :o of adding the same type to the front.

Moose,

I noticed that you converted to a "ram air" heating/defrosting system. I'm considering doing this if I can't find a reasonably priced motor to replace my Smith's heater blower motor. What did you use for the scoop?

Mark, that scoop is off a Rover 3500 car. It was on the truck when I bought it all those years ago. I think it looks pretty sharp, but don't think it has much effect. With the blower motor off, there is only the slightest "blast" of air coming through the system. I think there is a bit of a void in the air at the side of the fender, so the scoop isn't picking up much.

I saw an 88 once that had a clothes drier vent elbow sticking out the side. I probably work great but was ugly as hell.

Tell me more about the conversion of the series to the defender 110 frame and drivetrain?

Tim,

unlike some of the folks on this board, I don't have the know-how to do something like MercedesRover with a Series so I had ECR perform the work for me when I was living in Tokyo at the time.

part of the process can be seen here: http://www.eastcoastrover.com/Thompson109.html

I can tell you it is a fantastic combination and we now have had Blueboy for 7 years.

We just returned from a 2,800 mile 10 day trip to P.E.I./New England.

The Rover has been to many places in the US on and off-highway although I don't push it too hard on the trails.

Let me know if you have any specific questions that I might be able to answer for you.

Thx,

Jaime

Thanks Bear.....I do have tons of photos of the build but should probably save those for another thread and keep this one a place for people to show their pride and joy.

Thanks again Jim, couldn't have done it without your adapter and answers to my "daily dozen" questions over the past 18 months!!

Anyone interested in this conversion just needs to visit seriestrek.com and check out the 109 build..... many good photos.

What kinda cash you gotta throw down for just the motor alone?....

What kinda cash you gotta throw down for just the motor alone?....

This last turbo motor cost me two six-packs of Dos XX's. Well, I drank three of them before I left so actually it was only nine beers. :p

The 616 engine before that cost me a case of Bud and I didn't even get any. :(

Hunt around and you can find these things under rocks. These cars rust pretty quickly and good motors are easy and cheap to find. And as the cars rust and the engines last forever, there isn't much demand for them from the junk yards. Even if you have to go buy one don't expect to spend more than $500 or so for it.

This is what I am currently running around in. It’s an early preproduction S1, originally fitted with an 8hp motor that went south. Refitted with a 22hp.

Uses: Light recovery work, towing, yard duty.

Mods: Changed the gearing to raise the stock speed 30% in all gears. (Accidentally dropping the clutch in top gear will bring the front tires a foot off the ground.) (Mows 3' tall grass without bogging!:) ) (Neighbors begin to complain at 2-1/2'. :( )

Here's mine- 1960 SII Station Wagon. 2 year resto almost complete. Started out as poppy red non-runner with a nice, straight tub- changed color to pastel green. Had paint shop add flattening agent to ppg paint to get correct "sheen". Lots of NOS parts. All stock except for Rocky Mtn parabolics, Roverdrive, bumper overriders, Odyssey battery, Late style "antiburst" latches, liftgate/tailgate and probably some other minor details. Upholstery shop snafu is the only thing keeping her from being 100% done. Final touches- Brownchurch rack and Hella driving lights. Haven't figured out how to upload real photos yet- so unfortunately you'll need to get out your magnifying glasses!

This is my semi-nekked 1972 Series 3 SWB, i've been slowly stripping the paint off for some time now. I've done all three doors, vent panels, apron, right wing, front floor panels, rear interior light covers and part of the right quarter panel down to aluminum.
I've removed the body to do some bulkhead repair. Will be removing the drive train to have the frame hot dip galvanized this summer.

Two of my favorite Rovers. My first Rover a 1965 109 SW that I bought from an estate in Maine back in the late 80's. We knew that caretaker and bought a Rover in need of a complete rebuild. It sat at my Mom's place for years and then the I had Ted Howard of Maine rebuild her as I was on the West Coast by that time. The other 'Rover' is my dog Maggie who loves riding in Rovers, especially my 69 righthand drive 109 p-up - the toll booth attendants don't always like it of course!

Cool headlights. Is that a spot light on the right wing? Does it rotate w/a control in the cab? Where did you find that?

The headlights are made by Faessa, and have a much larger trim ring made of aluminum, not chromed steel.

Here's a better shot.

The spotlight does rotate, but not from the cab. It was on the Rover when it came into our family (1985). I assume the first or second owner added it. Once, during a snow storm (at night) headed into the Smoky Mountains, we lost all headlight and tail light power. We drove about an hour with only that spot light, and made it fine into Cades Cove. I was a boy at the time and will never forget it.

Here are a few pictures of me and a friends trucks on our trip to Alaska in Sept. They are both Carawagons, mine being a 1961 (not an original) and his is a 1970 (original).

Mine (the light green one) is powered by a Perkins/Mazda 4.182 Turbo Diesel, with a Santana Gearbox, and Roverdrive.

We spent 4 weeks living out of these trucks in some miserable weather up North but couldn't of been happier! Carawagons create a real nice platform for a smaller expedition truck.

lstrvr, I went through your pictures and I gotta say you've done an impressive job on that thing. The wiring is exactly as would be seen in my truck if I had the time to put into it as you have. It reminds me of a lighting control panel I designed and installed in a theater. Nice and tight with no suprises when you open the cover. You won't find many people who take the time to tidy up something hidden like wires under cover or behind a dash!

And to top it all off, after alll that work, someone who's not afraid to put it to work!!

Thank you for the kind compliments!

I have been extremely impressed with the Perkins 4.182TD installed. I'm not one to memorize numbers on torque and horsepower etc. but I can say that this engine pulls extremely strong with only ever having to come out of O/D for the steepest of hills. O/D engaged it cruises comfortably at 60mph, couldn't tell you the rpm as I don't have a tach installed yet, but it's still aways off the governor for sure. This engine is governed at 3800 rpm. On our trip From Vancouver, BC to Alaska and back, we covered over 8500kms and only burnt 1/2 liter of oil. I honestly couldn't believe it myself, but that is accurate. It also ran an avg. of 23-25 mpg.

Lots of work still to go. After driving my friends beautifully set-up Carawagon for a bit on that Alaska trip, I realized just how nice a series truck can be with power steering! As a result the truck is getting torn apart this weekend to start the Scout power steering conversion!

It never ends!

Wow- I am inspired.
I having been flirting with the idea of purchasing an old rotten out carawagon and fitting the top to my NaDA five door or my Series 111 109 3 door.
You know a tent is an easier option but there is just something about a carawagon.

Any insight if the carawagon top from a 3 door would fit the top of a 5 door?
The carawagon top I am interested in is rotten and leaks.
Any advice on a rebuild? I am wondering where I can buy the rubber seals for it. I tried Matt Savage in UK but no response.

How easy does the top erect and collapse?

Any info you can share about the carawagon rebuild would be great

Thanks,
Tim

She needs alot of work but I just spent yesterday in the pouring rain and mud taking the top off and bringing her home for a winter rebuild.

I have a NADA wagon on the way so the top will spend time on both the NADA and the 109 3 doors...

I might get real ambitious and have the 67 11a carawagon rebuilt on an updated chasis and gear (when I win the lottery) :)

Anyways 5 rovers for now is about all my wife will alow- God bless her soul!

Linus- Yes indeed those are the pics of my truck taken by Marcus Tooze (I think the son of the father who was the orig owner) Those were taken in NB- The gent I bought it from bought it about 8 years ago and had it parked in Iowa

Those pics are also on Teriann's website carawagon section.

I dismantled the interior this week and am now starting the roof top rebuild....Lots of fun work ahead!

Been looking around on here but have not found anyone with a Santana so here I am to "represent". :thumb-up:

I wonder. Was that original roof a flat top or something? It looks kind of funny and I'm curious if that's a Santana thing or not.

The truck is looking great by the way!

Santana
12-07-2008, 07:46 AM
Not an original roof by far. In South America you find all sorts of Frankenstein creations. I think it was local creation and I see a few Santana's here with them. When the Santana model was shipped to South America most had rag tops. Because of the different climates here (read COLD in the mountains) allot of aftermarket tops were introduced. Finding an original Santana top took me about 5 months. Finally found the one on there now in a little town called Villa Vicencia rotting away in a barn. The seats are not original though and I have a Tuffy center console installed as well. The engine hood is from a later model but opted for that because of the size and weight of my spare. Also, have the swing tire mount for a 90 defender model being installed on the back for another spare. I tried to make comprises to make the truck better while keeping it as original as possible.

Thanks:thumb-up:. Monday, they finish up electrical work and install the window wipers and washer system. Tuesday, The windows go in on the cabin. Wednesday, she comes home with daddy!!!

Yes, the axles have been moved under the springs instead of on top of them.

I had no rear shocks in that video clip, which is part of why it's so bouncy.

Just checking back in. Been quite a while since I've posted, works been busy for too long. Dug the rover back out from under the oak tree again, decided to finish version 3.0 the "volver", "rovo" or the "rolvo" don't know which fits better at this point. Where in Mass are you? I'm 18 miles from the Mass boarder in Cornwall, CT.

Griffinwerks

I'm near springfield, corwall is NW right? The b230 is the gasser 4cyl, but I'm really looking for the d24t which is the diesel 6cyl turbo, seemingly not so easy to find. The conversion I did uses the same tranny as the diesel and I made two of the adapter gears for the transfer so it'll drop in quick and easy. Length on the diesel is good and it will work with the 4cyl bulkhead. I did the gasser because after reading your story about the mercedes I tried one myself. Version 2.0. Everything worked out nice it was a front filter engine so no bulkhead issues, except in third gear it would slow down, on flat ground. It would have worked except the engine I got from my "buddy" at the local yard had all of 20hp maybe not but it seemed like it. It did turn out to be a 615 engine from an unidentified source, not the 240 it was supposed to have come from, which only cost me $200 at the local mercedes guru to figure out. Kind of turned me off to the mercedes, not it's fault but Jim NOT happy. The gasser has been real nice so far, the shifter is a little floppy but it's peppy and quiet. I have more build pics I just have to transfer them from the floppy disks that they are on(yes it was that long ago). I'd love to see your 617, now that looks like a cool install. This is the time of year I have time to do what I want, I work in the water pumping business so frozen=time off. If anyone is interested I have a 616 conversion kit all done that needs a new home including a IIa trans with clutch slave conversions needed to clear the engine and bellhousing mods to clear the starter. Heres a link to some pics. http://picasaweb.google.com/griffinwerks/Rover02# Thanks, Jim

Here is what I used to have (can't seem to imbed the photos):

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=32477999&l=3e861&id=24204731

Put on a new frame back in the summer of '02, thanks to the help of Dave Ducat in Lebanon, Conn.

Full album here:

I had to sell it soon after because I went back to get my Masters degree. However, this summer I am making a full-court press to get it back. The current owner hasn't registered it since he bought it in '03 and it sits next to a barn on his property. I shed a tear every time I pass by it on the road.

Dave was an invaluable help during the five or so months I spent, nearly every afternoon, tearing that IIa down and putting it back together. Now that the Masters degree is complete and I have a better-paying job, it's time to get my old Rover back.

You might try calling these people as they import ex MOD stuff all the time. My wife still won't let me get a Chieftain no matter how many hints I give at christmas.

Khaki Corps Imports (http://www.khakicorpsimports.com/)

If you're planning touch up you'll find it a pain as no one imports the ex MOD stuff anymore and they won't ship it. As it is an alkyd paint it fades at a different rate (Damn fast in the AZ sun) from enamel or the other types so you end up with a spotty truck.

On my 101 I plan a full respray one day when I feel rich. The original matt cabbage is very porous and soaks up water which doesn't help with corrosion. The general advice is to put on a coat of gloss to seal it and then a matt finish over that. Think about the factory bronze green then getting overpainted with cabbage and black.

My somewhat vague plan is to have the cabbage colour made up in high gloss enamel and then apply a matt clear coat over that.

This is the 1965 IIa. While I knew at the time that Series were prone to rust in the bulkhead and frame I did not seem to realize that a totally rust colored bulkhead met, uh, a totally rusted bulkhead. At least it had brand new tires, a winch, and a lot of good parts.

Actually, our preferred method is to have the photos stored off-site... Directions below.
http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2895

How to post photos in-line, rather than attaching them.

1. Go to any free photo hosting site like http://www.flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com/) or any other paid webserver photo posting service, like http://www.mac.com (http://www.mac.com/) for instance.

2. Upload your photos.

3. After you upload your photo on your new webserver space, have the image you want on your browser (preferably the right sized one too) and right click (or control click on a Mac) on the photo, and "Copy Image Location".

4. Buzz over here to the RoversNorth forum and go to the thread you want to post the photo into. Or you can start a new thread, or "Quote", or "Reply" in an existing thread.

5. In the WYSIWYG editing box where you type the message, there are little icons across the top - click on https://www.roversnorth.com/forums/images/editor/insertimage.gif and then paste in the "Copy Image Location" URL from step 4. This will "link" your photo (hosted on your webserver account) to the RoversNorth forum.

I hope this helps everyone.

- The larger image came up I put my mouse over it and clicked down with my mouse AND the "control" key on the keyboard at the same time and a drop down menu popped up. If you have a mouse with two buttons, you can just use your right mouse click to get the pop up window.
- I choose "Copy Image Location"
- Hit the https://www.roversnorth.com/forums/images/editor/insertimage.gif button above and hit paste into the field provided.

As requested...
I picked her up in this condition from a man in Anchorage (I'm in Fairbanks). Came with original owners manual and maint log. She has a bad sump gasket, but other than that, she runs like a top, showing 46k on the odometer, might be right... I wish I would have been able to redo her myself, as I would have done a few things differently, but eh I saved a heap of cash. The guy I got her from needed cash for taxes or something of the like, so he let her go for way less than he should have. she has no rust on her that I have been able to find yet. I had her on a lift for three hours so I could tell for sure where the oil was coming from.
Enjoy the pics.

What is with the paint texture on the hood?
Apparently there used to be a spare mount on the hood, and the guy didn't like the way it looked after he sprayed it... he said it had a few indentations by the rivets. So he textured it... he also did the same to the back door, and the bottom 1 1/2" of the rear panels. I wish I had gotten to it first  but its not too bad my beer doesn't slip off the hood now.

Cosmic,
I love the truck but where did it come from? I've never seen one that was that close to being a goner without actually having a major fault like a broken frame or a hole through the bulk head.

Please do yourself a favor and deal with the rust right now. Do it before you start driving it too much. Please! :)

Either get some waxoil or learn the recipe to safely make your own and get at all that rust. Keep at it on every oil change. You are lucky enough that the truck looks solid but you are perilously close to loosing a major item.

My experience, due to my location being in the northeast, might be particular but I've seen rust like that turn into huge useless holes within a few months of driving. Like about 3 months.

A little bit of mildly ugly work now could save you a lot bit of very ugly work later.

Good luck!

It was in Chicago for a few years. I don't know how many years but I do know Mayor Daley doesn't skimp on road salt. Which rusty spot worries you most? Is it the ENTIRE frame or the tool box?

I plan on spending a lot of time (time = money) with Stephen Peters of Safari Rover here in Orlando, digging through his Series scrapyard and shopping around for the best prices on available replacements. hopefully that will be here on Rovers North (...totally shameless kiss-up?)

Tim Smith
02-27-2009, 08:05 AM
The thing that worries me most about your rust is that it seems to be showing up in all the typical spots. I usually see rust start in one or two spots and then that spot will turn to Swiss cheese in short order thus ruining the truck in some way.

Your truck seems to have lost a lot of it's protective coatings and that is what has me worried most. The best looking areas of the frame are the leading edges around the engine and transmission. No surprise there but where the rust is prevalent, I think that neutralizing quickly will save you lots of aggravation. At least for the next couple of years. :p

I suppose honest pictures of rust highlight the problem areas more than the ***** eye. I just keyed in on the number of spots with the apparent lack of major failures. Thought it was interesting.

If you can keep after all of the steel on that truck, you may find that a frame over can be held off for a long time. Remember though, that these trucks used very thin sheet steel in the frames and elsewhere (not like your standard domestic truck) so once you see rust, you've got a short time to fix it before it's beyond repair.

EDIT: I suppose I used a reserved word. The ***** should be referring to the state of being unclothed.

Well, her's my old girl. A 1969 Seies 2A Airportable. Not exactly OE but each to his own:)

Unfortunately though she doesn't look quite as good at the moment. Got some smoke damage due to a vehicle fire in the garage/shed. Nothing drastic to my Land Rover but the Jag was a write off:mad:

What do you guys think honestly?

A bit shinier than I prefer in an airportable, but I wouldn't refuse it if you were to give it to me! ;)

I hope the Jag was a new one, not an old XKE or something similar...

As the name suggests I am really a fan of the cabbage and black look. Having said that I like it in red too. About the only thing I would change is the front bumper - it looks odd to my eye in body colour but then, as you say, each to his own. It is still a nice truck.

I have another, or rather my sister has another at my place, i'm renovating it for her, she's all in the proper olive green. I saw too many in that colour at my previous place of business so wanted something at the time that definately could not be mistaken for being "Army", especially over here in Northern Ireland;) Had enough of playing around in "can't see me suits myself".

As for the Jag, it was a '93 XJ6 3.2S in BRG. Problem was it was in fantastic condition and a hell of a shame. As for the new ones, I don't really like 'em about the only new Jag/Daimler i'd have gone for was the X350 Daimler Super 8, that or the now older Aston Martin DB9 or Vanquish, gorgeous cars:D But, the prettiest Jag has to be the E-Type, there is no prettier car. If only I had the money to buy, even a wreck is astronomical and rare as hens teeth!!

Anyway, back to the topic. Well she's just the standard 2286 petrol (don't like diesel even at 89.9p per litre here. She's tax free and costs a whopping £120 fully comp to insure for me, can't argue with that. I've got a load of conversions and upgrades in mind for her. She'll definately not be standard. In truth, she was destined to be as she started life as basically a log book, 3/4 of a chassis and the lower bulkhead. My old man told me if I could scrape the parts together to make her I could have it!! So, I did, raided the sheds and found most of what I needed.

I am a newbie, although I have posted on here before, I have never figured out how to post my photos. So here it goes. This is my 1969 Series IIa that I bought from ECR last winter. They had rebuilt it in '98 with a coil spring suspension, new Turner 2.25 petrol, 5 speed transmission and ARB Lockers front and back. See their link on it at: http://www.eastcoastrover.com/Lmaid88coil.html

So I finally got it to Wisconsin and then got a hard top on it for fall and winter from Marc Waitek at Singing Camel out here in the Middle West. I have since replaced the ECR roll bar with a four post powder coated model and installed a forward facing rear seat, a Pangolin rear receiver hitch, a rear trouble light, headlight guards and put the spare up on the bonnet. I still need to get the hard top repainted to all Limestone and add the alpine windows sometime. I also plan to install rockers on the sides. I run it with a soft top in the summer time and am thinking of replacing it sometime. I call it my mantoy and my college daughter really likes it, so that's cool. One thing really neat is the great people I have now come in contact through this board and I am helping to stimulate the economy single handedly by re-distributing my wealth with Rovers North, Singing Camel, Pangolin, and the most to ECR.

A little history here, I have wanted a Land Rover since I first became aquainted with them at eight years old as a matchbox car in my collection. That and Daktari and Cowboy in Africa made the Land Rover was to be for me. I could dream of lashing down all the gear and going on safari in it. A guy down the street from our house when I was about 11 or 12, had a red Series IIa, I think, and I would always covet that truck as it would pass by. Then later, I hunted in Africa with my father and grandfather at 15 and rode in Land Rovers and Land Cruisers. I rode on the spare on the hood of an 88 spotting game. And I actually got to drive one over there. It was a dream for me. In Africa, when I was there, they called the Land Rover on the hunt the Shooting Car, thus is why I have it as my line. But it took me 40 years to finally get one. Oh, I tried suppressing the dream with a '53 Ford Pickup, an S10 Blazer, two Isuzu Troopers, and an Explorer, but it was never done till I finally got this faded pastel green 88 delivered to my house last summer. It is way more truck than I am capable of needing, but I am sure glad I got it. I have only seen maybe three other series trucks up here in Wisconsin so it is a pretty rare truck up here. And now, I get the nod from other men on the road. Even bikers and we have a log of Harley bikers up here. The nod is that of approval of: wow what a cool truck. I told my wife about this and she just laughed. She didn't get it. I have never gotten a nod of being cool. They say that "value is all things real or perceived in the purchase of a good or service". This is real value for me.

Anyway thanks for letting us newbies follow your tail lights.

I hope this photo posting works.

Thompson,
what threw me was your term of copy image link. I was trying to find that command and finally just went to copy and it worked. But I am still messed up with the sizing as you can see my photos are different sizes and when I tried to add more photos they started to overlap of cover each other. Is there a proper size that I should resize to? And is there a way to add more photos to a posting here i.e. are you supposed to paste at a certain spot on the post in relation to the photos to allow it to expand for more photos?

thanks,

I plan to use the carawagon top for my 67 NADA #2 "continental" conversion. The rest of the truck I hope to use as my farm truck or maybe a complete hybrid project???

Anyways- I am one of those WI rover guys as well... I am planning on taking my NADA wagon up to Suring Wi (about 1 hour from GB)for maple syrup season in a few weeks....

Maybe I'll run into you of these days....

You gotta get the GB sticker- it serves 2 purpsoes- Great Britian and more importantly Green Bay!

Tim,
I saw that Carawagon that Marc had at his shop when I went down to Rover Camp last September to get my hard top. It's nice to see some other Wisc. Rovers. I know that IIa Lightweight and LH Drive are down in Milwaukee area. I have conversed with them. We could resurect the Badger Rover Club.
I work with a Jay Capelle here in Wisc. Rapids. Any relation?

Hi Jeff, I think your photo sizing is good. The 1024 x 768 blows out the side of the forum, but is a nice size - bigger is better as you can see more details. Up to 800px wide should be good to go for max width.

You can post your photos in any location relative to what you are trying to say. Sometimes I post the wording, then the photo. If you linked in your post 10 photos, they would all show up. I think you are good to go.

It has a new frame under it rebuilt axles and a solid fire wall that I'm finishing up welding soon. its a great truck and hope to see all at the winter romp next year in it, if everything goes as planned!!

Hope I am doing this right....sorry if I am not. I am new to Land Rovers but have always loved them. Especially the series II and IIa long wheel base. Since a little kid I loved them in the zebra paint sceme with huge basket roof racks. I finally got one and want it to be a daily driver. Some of my former cars that were daily drivers were a Willyswagon with a Mercedes 240D engine and a 61 IH crew cab utility truck with a perkins 354 turbo Diesel. I'm not new to converting over old junk. I am a toolmaker with alot of fabrication experience and had full plans on building the adapters to put a mercedes 240D engine in the rover. After some net searching I found info about what other people have done and found someone who was selling a already made kit. I bought the engine, trans, with all the special adapters and mounts etc for $600. The man I bought it from is not a toolmaker but his work was EXCELLENT. The engine he gave me was a really old 190, 200 or 220D motor. only good for about 55HP. I had a 82 240D motor sitting around that is rated for 67HP, much better. Mercdes makes things very universal and all the old 60-70s stuff workes on the newer 80's stuff. it literally took me 4 hours to put the 240 motor on the tranny in place of the old motor. The rover works great, slow like a 240D but great. in the pictures the motor is a bit dirty and the wires and hoses are a bit of a mess. it's still a work in progress. I have only been driving it for about 10 days now. My wife is a good artist and painted it in the zebra paint sceme with 8 cans of flat white and 6 cans of flat black, all freehand, in about 5 hours. Next on my list is a roofrack. I am making my own out of a old truck latter rack that is perfact in size. thanks,

Grover88,

My apologies if this sounds insane. But the Boston Globe ran an article last week on exotic cars, mostly 1960's racing vintage stuff that are restored by a shop on the north shore. And in that shot, there was a nice IIA in the background. Looks like your car is among some other nice vintage stuff. That wasn't the Rover in the article was it?

In any case, great looking ride. The mid-IIAs with a canvas top are my personal favorite.

I've been plugging away at a rebuild of my 63 SIIA for a few years now. I've been making some real progress latley now that I've turned the corner from tearing down to putting back together.

I'm at the point now of new wiring harness and new brake lines. As soon as that's sorted out, the body can go back on.

It all started when I went in for state inspection with leaky seals and sketchy brake lines. Ending up with a total rebuild on a galvy frame. Hoping to have it on the road in a month or so.

I'll post pictures if I can find them....

Thanks for all the advice I've found here. This is a great resource --Dave

Yes, it is functional. I had to order the inner part that is normally already installed on the 300tdi. Then the shop modified my air filter to seal off the top edgesw where the air used to come in and now there is a hose that mounts to the top of the filter. Will have to take a picture later.

Parabolics are ordered and on the way...Thanks to Steve from Rovers North!

Where did you get the snorkel? Is is functional or just looks? Diesel?

OK. Glad to know I'm not nuts, just way too obsessed! FYI, below is the link to the story in the Globe. As well as another shot of your ride. It is in VERY GOOD COMPANY!

more photos... [your Series in the distant background :thumb-up: to keep the thread on topic] Yes, good company! [in the photo link story there is also a 1972 Porsche 911 RSR, (another 911) and two Porsche 914-6 GTs, one that ran in Le Mans.]

This one is a rare beast.

Any chance you'll be attending the 22nd annual military vehicle rally in Weare, NH in a few weeks? I'd love to see an air portable there (or any british military vehicles other than a Saracen, for that matter).

The event listing can be found here (http://www.mvmvc.org/).

Did you do all the work yourself? How long did it take?

I just got Grover's engine pulled today - should have pics on the blog soon.

WOW!!! :thumb-up:

Do you have pics of the project?

I'm lucky if I get to spend two hours a day on Grover. I did get to work on him for a bit over 4 hours today though.

How much did you do? Did you replace much or upgrade?
