There are two threaded holes on the bottom of the differential case near the driveshaft. Does anyone know what size, thread, pitch they are?

I'm not understanding where you are talking. Is this a Sals or a Rover case?

The bolt holes are the same on both. There are two small holes on the flat bottom of the case near the propshaft.
I think they are a size 10mm with a 1.25 pitch.

That sounds correct. I have the tap if you need it.

It is on later Rover-type differential "third members". My '73 had this type of diff in the front with the Salisbury in the rear. The early Rover diffs didn't have the large rectangular block on the bottom. This block houses the oil passages to the pinion bearings and has 2 threaded holes toward the rear.

Unfortunately, JUST THIS WEEKEND, I gave my old one away to another Rover enthusiast so I can't confirm the bolt size, sorry...

Just need the bolts.
I will find out today if I am correct.

Mine does not have them either Tim, the coiler difffs have them.

Yes, Spechols has coiler chassis and axles. :thumb-up:

Oh yes! I forgot about those. Thanks for reminding me.

Well I found a 10m with 1.25 pitch threads and it does not fit.
It is too big in diameter.
It looks like 8m is too small.
Any ideas?
Anyone know the size?

Whitworth!

J/K!

I dunno......

Why are they there? For mounting a skid-plate for protecting the u-joint?

My guess is that they are there for assembly or something, but yes - I want to use them to mount a skid plate.

3/8" BSF

most likely. Have you tried a 3/8" coarse thread bolt? A 3/8" UNC will fit in a 3/8" BSC threaded hole (although the thread pitches are different). However, a 3/8" UNF will not go in a 3/8" BSF hole.

You can bolt one of these Pinion Guards to the holes:
