Driving to work this AM at my customary 50 mph the engine shut down and the charge light came on for just a second. Then everything started back up and appears to be running fine....can anyone advise what happened, and is this a portent of major issues? Car has been running fine to date, it has a Petronix ignition but is otherwise stock. Many thanks for your comments.

- If the alternator goes south the light will come on but the engine should still run on the battery.

- If the battery fails and the engine is already running you should be able to continue on the alternator.

- As the both the charge light came on and the engine stopped it would suggest the circuit was interupted in some way.

Cheers

Did you hit a really big bump in the road?

One of several things happened.

1. A wire is loose on the back of your ignition switch, or the ignition switch has a bad contact somewhere in it.

2. You have too many keys on your key chain, that when jarred by a large bump caused the above contact to momentarily lose contact, resuming contact after the bump.

3. Your distributor has a loose wire.

I had a problem with the female wire plugs that so into the little fuse block on the fire wall next to the voltage regulator.
I just squeased them with a pair of pliers as they were very loose.
All I had to do was brush them with my hand and the engine would shut off.
I guess a bump would do the same.

Voltage Regulator?

Are you still running that old generator? I hope you carry a spare.

Yep!
Just got the rig about a month ago.
Still working on upgrades and updates.
You know all the little stuff a 35 year old vehicle needs.
Door seals, window tracks, carb, brake hoses, oil leaks, etc,
Good running rig just needs a lot of small crap no one took care off.

Wiring harness this summer, the insulation is falling off!
I'm sure an alternator is in my future!:thumb-up:

But no rust anywhere and that to me is the most important thing!:D
