    tips on rear seals

I have a 1970 ex military series IIa

Any tips or warning on replacing the rear seals. They are now both leaking little so I purchased all the part I think need.

    Peace,
    James

If you are talking axle seals, then I would replace the distance piece ( the collar that the seal lip rides on). This piece will have a groove worn into it from grit and many years of use. Putting a new seal on an old distance piece will only have you doing the job over again soon. Distance piece for the axle stub are easily replaced by splitting/stretching with a cold chisel and new ones heated a bit and driven back on.

Some may argue aver the leather seal being superior to the neoprene/rubber type. I have always used the latter with no problems. A smear of grease on the sealing lip of the seal ensures it will be lubed when it is installed.

      Thank you!

That sounds like good advice as I don't really want to be doing it too soon on freezing Maine winter ground.

      Peace,
      James
