View Full Version : Need a new head

A friend of mine pulled the head off his '63 to find the source of the diminished power he was experiencing. The head gasket between 2 and 3 was blown with about 3/4" worth of HG material being MIA. The truck sat for a decade and he recently fired it up. Low power, weird exhaust note... He suspects a faulty HG, corrosion due to lack of use, combined with a lack of a head re-torque for the failure. He'd planned to mill it to 8:1 anyway, but it has a pair of cracks to go along with the furrow between the two combustion chambers. The block survived with a little damage and probably won't need to be decked. Unfortunately, I didn't bid on the $80 head that was on ebay a few weeks ago.

So, anyone have a usable petrol head available on the cheap? He prefers an 8:1, but one without cracks or fire damage would be appreciated just as much. He just got married and doesn't have a lot of dosh to spend on this unexpected problem. Like me, he could use a good 2.25 petrol exhaust manifold as well.

Many thanks!

There's a metric head in the clearance section from our hosts. Drop the change for a nice head.

I have a all-most brand new head. I purchased it from Rovers North and installed it and ran it for about 1000 miles before removing the engine.
I'll let it go for 1/2 price that Rovers North has it for.
Let me know.

Go check it out at USPS.com. It's the large box flat rate. I plugged in 20X8X8 at the 70lb max from 90210 to 25304 and it spit out $12.95. $12.50 if you pay online.

The USPS large flat rate box is 12" x 12" x 5½" so a cylinder head won't fit inside. However, it is a good deal for shipping ring+pinions, or shackles, or anything else that is heavy and small.

Hehe - me and my welder see a cheap way of shipping T-posts across the country. Now all I need is someone on the East Coast with a good sawzall.

ha! that is too funny. Think of the things you could ship in a flat rate box that way...

Folks,

I am Apis' friend (thanks for the posting!) who is looking for a replacement cylinder head for my '63 petrol engine. I would like to find a crack-free and serviceable 568750 casting ('67 and later Series), either 7:1 or 8:1 CR. If it is a 8:1, perhaps the pushrods too?

Hopefully I can find one which I can decoke, hand-lap the valves, slight surface cut, new valve seals and be good to go.

Wish I could swing a new head, but someone might have lying around what I am looking for at a friendly price.

Thanks!

Thanks very much for your response, Nathan. You are in Strasburg, somewhat close to my cabin in Warm Springs. Might not have to worry about shipping! A couple questions, if I may.

Is the head fitted w/ valves and springs? And I believe you commented earier about a low profile waterpump style (Series II rather than IIA). What is the difference there? It seems that 8:1 CR and a Series II style (or design) conflicts, as 8:1 heads came with later IIAs and IIIs (casting 568750).

What is the casting number? And, might you have a set of 8:1 pushrods?

I am afraid I don't have much $ to spend right now, and I don't want to insult you or anyone in any way with a low offer. That is why I was looking for a good, used head that someone didn't need anymore. NOS parts certainly can fetch more money. What $ ballpark are you thinking?

Thank you kindly Nathan - perhaps we can work something out!

you can see the casting number, and its dated 7/28/1960
the copper stuff it to keep rust away, ive had this since 1986 or 1987.
a shot of a running engine i bought from another member from the site, its from a 1969 left hand drive 88 pick-up, the head can be removed if you need it, its a 7 to 1
if i dont have the 8 to 1 rods, a guy 30 miles from here has new ones in his shop
the area on this nos head where the thermostat sits is lower than the other one i have, it will not work on my 1966 88 without putting a lower waterpump housing on it, the head would sit 1/2 higher in the front and not sit on top of the block
