RN site says its no longer available, anybody know exactly what it did? I'm not worried about staying original as far as the electricals go, and it seems like something I should be able to replace with a stock part from an electronic repair shop...

just replace the glow plugs with the more modern probe type- they don't require the resistor and they are wired in parallel so if one happens to fail the others continue to work.

or just buy the resistor:

So, I ended up buying the new probe type plugs, and they arrived this morning. The fitting instructions say to keep using the resistor - is it still nessecary after all, or are these instructions a bit off?

I believe with the probe type you do not require the resistor. I know it appears in the diagramfor them but there is no reasonfor it as far as I can see.

If it is any help, My 2.5 has no resistor. Just a couple of fat wires going through a relay that I installed to 12v +. Presumably the 2.5 has probe-type heater plugs.

They are, in my case, wired in series though the kit yorker linked to have wires that make parallel wiring possible.

dig around here:

the subject came up last winter- I remember the concensus was that the resister was shown int he diagram but it was in error. It really doesn't make sense to use them with the parallel type solid probe glow plugs anyway.

Yeah, I found a similar thread over there, and if I squint at the new plugs in just the right light, I can see the 11v marking on them. Now I just have to scrape enough sludge off the block to be able to find and remove the old ones...

If you don't run the resistor, at least drop an inline fuse or fusible link in its place. If you get a voltage spike you could burn the buggers out.

Already taken care of - when I put the new harness in, the glow plugs got their very own circuit with a 30A fuse and everything. It's high tech stuff, I tell ya.
