On a '67 IIA... where should the VIN # plate be? I can't find it on my new (to me) LR.

On the bulkhead (firewall) below the instruments in the middle of the dash. Or just in front of the gear lever.

There should be 2 plates there. The VIN plate and also a plate that gives instructions on the 4WD gear levers.

is this where it should be?

Note the lack of anything under the instrument except black paint and some drill holes...

The SIIa on this page doesn't show it, but if you scroll down to the SIII dash, you can see the number plate just forward of the transfer case levers: http://www.roversnorth.com/store/c-107-dashboard.aspx

unfortunately no plates in place on that bulkhead. Any suggestions on how to discover the vin # / history? Possibly from engine block # or frame serial #??? Otherwise I am going to have a tough time titling. title has been MIA for about 6 yrs (previous owner also MIA) and now it seems I have no way of performing a VIN search with Car Fax...

The number on that plate would be the same number that's on the outside of the chassis' front horn. On the vehicle's right side, look in past the front tire.

A '67 Rover won't have a VIN, it'll have a chassis number : http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FAQ.S.Chassis_Numbers.type.html

Cosmic it looks like you have great Rover there. Can you post pictures?

Unfortunately sometimes people sell VINs off of these Rovers for use in other vehicles. Hopefully this didn't happen to yours...

On my bugeye ('68) it is on the far right inside the shelf area. You can see the see it in this pic.

Parcel shelf location on my 67 NADA 109 and 71 NADA 88. The 88 also has a plate in the driver's door jamb.

My '72 NADA 88 has the door-jamb one, but I've not seen 'em on anything that wasn't a NADA SIII. Your '71 is right at.... The '60 doesn't have such, and I've not seen any on vehicles from the '60's vintage.....

AFAIK, the engine no. doesn't have a relation w/ the vehicle's chassis no.

Oh, on the parcel-shelf location: again, AFAIK, that's the 'alternate' location when the additional heating would be mounted that would block the location in front of the transfer-case lever. Maybe not 'official', but it's what it's seemed like to me.

Good Idea...I'll have to remove the "custom" stereo speakers mounted over the heater tubes and check for the plate. as far as pics... here is a link to check it out. lots of work ahead of me...

So many mysteries with this LR, I now think it may be a '66 but will have to get that serial number (VIN) to find out for sure.

My 67 109 NADA has it riveted in it's orig. location. It is in the 'glove box' area - top right corner. Seems like most 88's I've seen had it located on the center area of the lower section of the bulkhead. My 109 also came w/the factory heat duct that goes across this area though.

Good luck!

Pretty sure carfax only goes to 1980 or so. I think it's limited by the # of characters in the vin.

Here's the faded plates of my '63 SIIA 88" Station Wagon (American export spec) in what I believe are their original location(s).

The Serial Number (aka frame number) may also be found on the frame..... I say 'may' because it may be unreadable or rotted away or missing because the frame has been replaced (like mine). Its on or near the left front spring hanger I think, here's more info: http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Series%20chassis_no.htm

There is a plate on the left hand side of the firewall, see if it is behind that like the bugeye if its not go with the numbers off of the frame.
Good Luck!

After an exhaustive search of the entire bulkhead area, basically the entire interior, there is not one serial plate, plackard or anything with the serial number on it.

I moved merrily onto the chassis in the area of the Front-Left-suspension / forward engine mount. The only thing I found on TOP of the frame was the brake line fastened oh so neatly. The outer face of the frame yielded nothing also. And YES, I removed all mud, (very light) rust and was able to see paint / metal. I did this about 8" forward and aft from the upper shock mount. Nothin'

My only other option is the right side of the frame which is naturally hidden under the Heater intake hose, air filter mount and battery mount... I'd rather just remove the front wing... does that make ANY sense?

Did you look on the right front frame horn? It should be on the outside of the frame just above where the front spring hanger is welded on.

JEFF and everyone else who responded to this thread.... THANK YOU!

It was located on the front right spring hanger tab, not on the frame itself but on the welded-on hanger. Now the history lesson begins.

Congrats!

Was it a 254xxxxxA serial number?

244xxxxxC ... I think it is a '66.

Doh, a 5 would be a 109, yup, a 4....

From the FAQ, a 24429822 is right at the VERY end of '66. If your number is less than that, it should be a '66. If it's higher, a '67..... Actually, w/ a C suffix, it should be a '66... (or, an early '67, maybe)....

les, could you be any more committed? there's another site i've found http://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html that you put in the chassis number and it gives you a bit of info.
