I just bought a Surco spare tire mounted bike rack for my 1994 D90. While the add copy said it fits "all vehicles", of course it did not fit mine. Has anyone found a tire mounted rack that works well?

It looks like it wouldn't be too hard to fabricate a new backing plate to make the Surco rack work. I'm in eastern CT. Any ideas on a metal working shop that might do this kind of thing?

Thanks for your ideas!

On my 1994 Defender 90 Soft top I used a Rhode Gear tire mount bike rack on the stock size tire. Worked great with two bikes from Vermont > Colorado Solihull Nationals and back. I ended up putting some foam pipe insulation around the corners where it touched the alloy.

I use a Yakima rack which is no longer produced. You might try and find one used.

Thule makes one as well but requires changes to the backing plate to fit the stock tire rack.

The nice thing about the yakima is it keeps the bikes high off the ground for clearance.

Thanks, guys. Good looking trucks!

Any idea of the model name on the Yakima rack?

Yeah, looks like it was called the "spare roc":

Good luck finding one!

Just wanted to close the loop on this one. I finally got around to modifying the Surco rack backing plate to fit the D90 bolt pattern. It's been solid so far and could never actually fall off. However, the rack itself is a pain to use. I definately would not recomend it. -p
