Should I use a non-hardening (soft) gasket seal or a hardening? Thanks

Non-hardening (Permatex #2) is usually the way to go.

You can use RTV gasket maker ( "The Right Stuff")that is what I used and it works the best because you can really get a lot on there. The gasket sets(proline) for the whole tranny is really cheap you can go that way too. Part Number PLC605 is the whole set of gaskets for the tranny ( not bad to have lying around)

Partial Thread HiJack -
I used Permatex anaerobic gasket maker (red) on trans. Directions (which I ignored) mentioned using "Permatex Surface Prep" activator on one of the mating surfaces. I'm assuming this isn't vital. But thought I'd ask. I'm not taking it apart regardless. I'll wait for the inevitable leaks and then revisit.
