OK everyone, time for today's blonde question...

I am about to go get my brake backing plates powder coated. However, the adjuster is still on there... I have the "snail" type.

It looks like the bold was pressed in somehow, and can't be removed. Can anyone confirm that?

Thanks!

just paint them. powder coat for these is overkill.

Also, if you paint them I can confirm that you do not need to remove & replace the adjusters as long as they work to begin with. Just clean everything, prime & paint and the adjusters will break free quite easily afterwards. Not so sure with powdercoat.

Also be aware that powdercoat can be quite thick and tough. If you coat the mating surfaces and the area under the bolt heads you may have a tough time maintaining the proper torque on the fasteners after assembly. Even when I painted my backing plates (as well as hubs and swivels housings too), I made sure to mask the mating surfaces.

Thanks guys... as far as powder coating goes, I already was taking in the rear axle, brake drums, and various other bits and pieces in to get coated, so the backing plates were an extra 20 bucks, and now they will match the drums.

I talked to the shop about the adjusters, they said it won't be a problem, that the powder coat is about 2 mil thick, and will break easily when it's torqued. They did mention that they may not be able to remove all of the rust from inside the adjuster bolt and washer, so the coating there may not be very good.

We will see how it turns out. Pics in a week or so when everything comes back.
